Mayweather vs. Cotto: If There's No Rematch, Face Manny Pacquiao and Retire!

Floyd Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO), after a rather sensational fight against a bigger, confident and competitive Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO) this past May 5, has little else to do.

Mayweather's business partners will obviously have their numerous suggestions to try to keep the 35-year-old boxing stimulus check from leaving the sport, but at this point, it's time to fight Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO) and leave.

Mayweather sold 1.5 million pay-per-views against Cotto, the third-biggest draw ever in the sport.

The televised card included the still popular 40-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO), against Mexico's newest star, 21-year-old Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO).

Mayweather likes to make more and more money with each fight, as noted by his rising purses—$22.5 million guarantee versus Mosley, $25 million versus Victor Ortiz, and now $32 million guarantee versus Cotto.

Who's left? What fighter can help Mayweather keep his purse rising? Mayweather can sell a young, hungry warrior in Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO) once, but the audience won't buy it in massive numbers again.

If he won't face Pacquiao for whatever money quibble is between them, a Cotto rematch seems to be the only solid financial decision. The fight with Cotto proved to satisfy everyone's thirst for blood.

The rematch only needs a few encouraging words from Cotto about how he'll go for the knockout harder this time and how Mayweather plans to beat him even more decisively, and the fight's sold.

But when he's beaten Cotto again and Pacquiao has beaten Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KO) again in their fourth battle rumored for this fall (and Timothy Bradley June 9), there needs to be a closure to their careers.

The young guns shouldn't get a boost off the aging corpse of today's top pound-for-pound greats, but that is what is destined to happen if Mayweather and Pacquiao don't hurry up and get it on already.
