My Thoughts On Women's Wrestling Today

Steven DavisonJan 31, 2009

This is my first article for bleacher report and hopefully not my last. I've been an avid wrestling fan for the best part of 13 years since the very first match I saw which was Shawn Michaels against Bret Hart at Wrestlemania. Ever since then I've been hooked.

But during the last few years, since early 2007 I've slowly been losing interest due to the lack of real talent. Sure WWE gives us great male talent (and some of the best in recent times) like; Orton, Jericho, Marella, and even Triple H. But during 2008 I finally came to the realization that the WWE had no talented women on their roster. Sure they have Mickie James, Beth Phoenix, Natalya Neidhart and Victoria. But two of the four listed have been the biggest misuse of talent I've personally seen in the last ten years.

As I was looking for an alternative to the WWE's Diva's aka models, I heard about a lesser known company called Shimmer. The sister company of Ring Of Honor which I had seen a couple of Pay Per View's prior to 08. So I started rooting around the vastness of Youtube and starting seeing name's like; (Cheerleader) Melissa Anderson, Daizee Haze, Lacey and probably the woman with the most talent in the United State's Sara Del Rey. These women were like none I'd seen in a long time since the days of Fabulous Moolah (Rest In Peace) and Bull Nakano.

The first to majorly impress me was Del Rey or The Death Rey to her fans, as she was not only a strong woman which is the complete opposite of a "typical" diva. Then as I started to watch more video's on Youtube I saw the wide range of moves she can execute with perfection. Also such a great in ring competitor to the standards of Del Rey has clearly put in the work to become as successful as she is.

The next Shimmer athlete that caught my attention was Lacey, the omega heel as I like to refer her. Where to start when trying to describe this ladies act, she has the whole package, charisma? Check. Technique? Check. The look? Check. She is the triple threat when it comes to a great female talent.

The first Shimmer DVD I actually bought was Shimmer vol. 5, why is this important you may be wondering. In this volume it has a spectacular match between Lacey and Nikita (WWE's Katie Lea), throughout the match Lacey stays in character and keeps drawing heat from the crowd, whether it be cheap heat or not she got it. That match was a prime example of the talent that Lacey has, she has spent years working the indie's to hone her craft and she has it down to a tee.

Another great Shimmer athlete is Daizee Haze, the 25 year old is a ring veteran she has been wrestling professionally for about six years. She is definitely (if used correctly) a future TNA Knockouts champion.

The first match I saw Haze compete in was on the Shimmer vol. 5, it was herself against Rebecca Knox. I can safely say the match was one of the greatest women's wrestling matches I have ever seen, it had some amazing mat wrestling which showed the amount of technical ability both women possessed. If you have the chance to watch I highly recommend it.

Well I guess that was my first article/rant over and if you think I missed anyone out like Nikki Roxx, Allison Danger and last but not least Cheerleader Melissa. They will all most likely get their own article in future. Until next time god bless.
