Milton Bradley's Games Now in Chicago

Jake GonzalesJan 31, 2009

The offseason might look promising to some casual Chicago Cubs fans, but as soon as Milton Bradley was signed, questions starting arising about the direction of a team who was a playoff team the year prior.

The Cubs made a splash in the baseball world when Bradley was signed on Jan. 8, but this splash did not please most Cubs fans. Bradley's character has been called into question due to his recent outbursts, not only by Cubs fans but baseball fans as well.

In the past four season, there have been four acts of 'maturity' on Bradley's behalf that cause great worry.

There was the incident where he threw a fit after being ejected. He retaliated for his 'unjust' ejection by throwing a bag of balls down the left-field line.

There was also an incident when he got into it with a fan, at home nonetheless. Instead of avoiding another confrontation only months after the baseball bag throwing incident, he confronts the fan, eventually running himself out of the game and celebrating with ripping his hat and jersey off.

Let's not forget 2007's argument where in the end Bradley was tossed, but the worst part was that Bradley ended up tearing his ACL in the process. If umpire Jim Joyce did actually call him "a f***ing piece of shit," then I understand his anger, but not to the point of injuring himself.

The last incident was this past season, arguably his best season at the plate, but he could not keep his temper in control once again. After a comment from announcer Ryan Lefvebre, Bradley ran up four flight of stairs to find Lefvebre.

Lefvebre called into question Bradley's temper and Bradley's ability to be a good teammate. Of course, Bradley said he just wanted to talk to him but that statement is believable as Bradley actually keeping his temper in check.

All of these incidents were 'mature', at least mature enough for the Cubs to agree on a three-year deal.

With the best record in Major League Baseball, the Chicago Cubs have made more signings and trades than just Bradley this off-season, but none more controversial. None have more worries and questions, but none with more upside as well.

After 100 years of pain and tears, fans are desperate. Maybe these 'Lovable Losers' need some help from Bradley's attitude to become the 'Hatable Winners.'
