Oklahoma Football: What You Need to Know About Transfer WR Jalen Saunders

Micah HixonJun 7, 2018

In the wake of the mass indefinite suspensions handed down to the majority of the veteran wide receivers at Oklahoma, a little-known receiver from Fresno State has quietly transferred in.

Jalen Saunders was the top receiver at Fresno State a year ago, earning All-Western Athletic Conference honors. The 5'9", 160 pound receiver had been a traditional deep threat in the Bulldogs' offense over the past two seasons. In 2011, he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in receiving and pulled down 12 touchdowns.

Saunders apparently did not like how he was being used in new coach Tim DeRuyter's offense, and elected to take his talents to Norman. He will not be eligible to play until the 2013 season, but will instantly add much needed depth to the depleted wide receivers corps.

The speedy receiver has recorded a time of 4.33 seconds in the 40-yard-dash, and has impressed coaches and fans alike with his breakaway speed downfield. With NFL-like speed, Saunders could make an immediate impact on special teams by returning punts and kickoffs.

While he is accustomed to playing the on the outside, Saunders may get some looks playing the slot as well. His speed creates numerous matchup problems for any opposing defense, and leaving a linebacker lined up on him on the inside would be less than ideal.

Saunders' heart is playing on the outside, and he will likely get a fair shake playing where he is most comfortable. Per an ESPN interview with Robert Kuwada of the Fresno Bee and Joe Davidson of the Sacramento Bee, Saunders can improve on his strength and ball catching.

Davidson went on to say that "Sooners fans will love his work ethic and ability to blast into the end zone."

Here's hoping that Saunders puts in the work necessary over the next year to contribute in 2013.
