Players Championship 2012 TV Schedule: Don't Expect Tiger Woods' Woes to Let Up
Tiger Woods' struggles, at TPC Sawgrass and elsewhere, continued during the first round of the 2012 Players Championship on Thursday and don't figure to relent before the weekend is through.
Woods, who's set to tee off at 1:49 p.m. EDT on Friday, shot a two-over 74 through his initial 18 holes, leaving him in a tie for 100th and in danger of missing the cut for just the eighth time in his illustrious career. If he does, it'll mark the first time he has ever failed to make it to the weekend at back-to-back events, after slinking out of the proceedings at the Wells Fargo Championship last week.
This comes after Woods wound up in a tie for 40th at the Masters, all but squandering what little momentum he had at his back after breaking his three-year winless streak at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
And there may be no worse occasion for Tiger to attempt to reclaim his mojo than the Players Championship. Woods hasn't won this tournament since 2001 and has registered but one top-10 finish at TPC Sawgrass in the last decade.
Of greater concern, though, is Tiger's two-year streak of withdrawing from the event. In 2010, Woods ducked out with a neck injury after seven holes on Sunday, the very same weekend he publicly begged his now-ex-wife (and the world) to forgive him for his extramarital misdeeds.
Last year, Tiger showed up with more physical issues than the guy from the "Operation" board game and lasted just nine holes (on which he shot a six-over 42) before ditching the final 45.
By all accounts, Tiger is healthy this time around, though his swing—now in the process of being rebuilt for the third time, with the help of new coach Sean Foley—still seems to be a work-in-progress.
Woods will get his groove back eventually. His win at Bay Hill two months ago suggests that he's still capable of playing winning golf.
Just don't expect that to happen this weekend, not at an event that has been a veritable house of horrors for the world's most famous golfer.
