Mayweather vs Cotto: Canelo Alvarez and Fighters We'd Love to See Junito Fight

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez would be an exciting matchup. The bout would give both fighters an opportunity to improve their current standing at 154 pounds.

The fight would be another chapter in the infinite Mexican-Puerto Rican boxing series, and the action would likely live up to the hype.

We would find out if Alvarez is for real, and if he's ready to challenge the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Cotto did look good in defeat vs. Mayweather on May 5th, but it was still a loss.

If Cotto could follow this performance with a win over an up-and-coming fighter like Alvarez, he will have further rejuvenated his career. Alvarez isn't the only fighter I'd like to see Cotto fight in his quest to prove he isn't finished.

Here are two other opponents that would make exciting foes for Junito.

Sergio Martinez

Maravilla has dominated the middleweight division and he is looking for a big payday as a reward. There are few, if any opponents at 160 pounds that can offer him that kind of purse.

At 37 years old, Martinez doesn't have a lot of time to waste.

He should be happy to come down to 154 pounds to battle Cotto in what would be an entertaining bout. Martinez has already called out Mayweather; defeating Cotto at 154 pounds would bring him closer to Mayweather's radar.

Mayweather has said he would fight Martinez if he could make 150 pounds, so it's possible the two could compromise.

If Cotto scores a win over Martinez, it would be the biggest win in his career in my opinion. This could set him up for another big payday and possibly a title shot.

Andre Ward

The winner of the Super Six tournament would also be a great opponent for Cotto. It's one of the few big money fights I think Cotto would come in as the favorite.

Despite battling through the tournament, some may still doubt the quality of Ward's opponents—aside from Carl Froch.

Ward is not a terribly hard puncher, but he's a solid fundamental boxer. If Cotto can make it a brawl, the fans would get a treat, and Junito may get a victory.

If Ward wins, he throws his name in with the best known fighters in the 165-to-147-pound range.
