WWE's Best Match of the Week: Orton and Sheamus vs. Jericho and Del Rio on Raw

Drake OzMay 10, 2012

Sheamus and Daniel Bryan delivered a hell of a match on last week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown.

It was a reminder of just how great their Two-out-of-Three Falls Match at Extreme Rules was and how much chemistry they have.

Surprisingly, though, it wasn’t the WWE’s best match of the week, because that distinction goes to the awesome tag team match that we saw on Monday’s Raw.

In a star-studded bout, Sheamus and Orton teamed up to take on Chris Jericho and Alberto Del Rio in the latest match in a long line of great TV tag team matches.

We can criticize the WWE all we want for what the company does wrong, but one thing it does right is book tag team matches involving its top superstars

We saw a very good tag team match on last week’s SmackDown with Big Show and Orton teaming up to beat Kane and Cody Rhodes, and the WWE continued to prove that it does a great job of putting these matches together by doing it again on Monday’s Raw.

Although the match seemingly came out of nowhere, you got the sense simply from the four competitors involved that it was going to be good.

And that’s exactly what it was.

There was nothing overly complicated about the match and there were no insane spots or anything like that, but for the entire 13 minutes, it featured some very good wrestling and it ended with a nice little finish.

At the conclusion of the match, Sheamus wiggled out of the Walls of Jericho and nailed Y2J with a backbreaker, Del Rio came into the ring and was blasted with an RKO by Orton, Sheamus went for the Brogue Kick, missed (and hit Orton), allowing Jericho to nail Sheamus with a Codebreaker for the win.

The ending of the match was extremely well done because it set up the Fatal 4-Way for the World Heavyweight Championship at Over the Limit and helped reestablish Orton as a no-nonsense baby face when he nailed Sheamus with the RKO post-match.

Kudos to the WWE for giving us a great match that told a very solid story, one that should lead to an excellent World Heavyweight title bout next Sunday.
