London 2012: Jordyn Wieber and Top Contenders for All-Around Gymnastics Gold

Richard LangfordJun 6, 2018

America's Jordyn Wieber enters the 2012 London games as the defending world all-around champion, and one of the clear favorites to take home the gold. She'll have plenty of competition.

This is all going to set up a spectacular women's gymnastic competition in one of the summer games' showcase events.

Here is a look at Wieber and her toughest competition.

Jordyn Wieber, USA

Wieber, 16, has been on the gymnastic radar for a while despite her young age. In 2007, she placed second in the vault and third in the all-around and the bars.

She was even better the following year, grabbing a gold in the all-around, vault and floor. She also took home silver in the beam and bronze in the bars.

Injuries set her back the next couple of years, but she bounced back in a big way, winning the last world all-around title.

Wieber is an aggressive gymnast. She performs many high risk/reward moves. If she is on her game, she is going to be tough to beat.

Viktoria Komova, Russia

Komova, 17, finished second to Wieber in the all-around world championships by .033 points. And if Wieber is the favorite to win gold, she is clearly choice 1a.

Komova also earned that second place finish despite the fact she was nursing an ankle injury.

She announced her presence on the scene in 2010 when she won the hotly contested Russian national all-around gold medal.

She is particularly strong on the bars and beam.

Aliya Mustafina, Russia

Mustafina, 17, won the world all-around competition in 2010. Unfortunately, she injured her ACL before the next year's competition and was unable to compete.

She first really burst onto the scene in 2009 when, at the Russian national championships, she won on the balance beam, took second on the bars, and placed third on the floor.

Mustafina is healthy now, and ready to be a factor.

These three women have been going head-to-head for several years now, and figure to be the three faces on the podium when the all-around medals are handed out.
