Canelo Alvarez Is Money May's Best Option Besides Manny Pacquiao

Canelo Alvarez is a rising star in the boxing world and if there was a fighter who could take on Floyd Mayweather Jr. and create the same buzz as a fight with Manny Pacquiao, it would be Alvarez.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is a Mexican-born boxer who is currently undefeated (40-0-1) and the WBC Light Middleweight Champion. Coming off a drawn-out beatdown of Shane Mosley, Alvarez has proven that he is in a different class of fighter.

But is he in the class of Mayweather Jr.?

Hardly. Money May proved that he is in a class all his own after his win against Miguel Cotto. While Alvarez is extremely talented at the tender age of 21, he doesn't have anywhere near the legendary skill that Money possesses.

Adding insult to injury for the chances of this fight happening, Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions have already stated that Alvarez will not fight Mayweather Jr. because Canelo is not ready.

According to boxingscene.com, Larry Merchant gave the news that such a fight was highly unlikely.

The only thing that could potentially save this fight from being put on the back burner is the fact that it could generate a lot of money.

We all know the following Mayweather Jr. has. People get Money May fights to cheer him on, or to possibly see him lose seeing as how he's undefeated and somewhat unliked by the public. No matter what, he's become increasingly respected with his dominating wins.

Meanwhile, Alvarez has an impressive following of his own and earned seven figures in his fight with Mosley, according to boxinginsider.com. He has been largely popular among the vast Hispanic following of the sport and is becoming more mainstream, having been on two Mayweather pay-per-view events as an undercard.

This fight makes all the sense in the world from every aspect. Two top fighters with huge followings that can generate a ton of money.

I guess now all we have to wait for is Canelo to be ready for such a showdown. But De La Hoya can't wait too long, Mayweather is 35 already and won't be young forever.
