2012 NFL Free Agents: 2 Impact Players Still Available on Open Market

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

Just because the free-agent frenzy is long gone doesn't mean there aren't impact players left on the market.

With the start of offseason rookie camps that precede mandatory mini camps in June, now's the perfect time for teams to add a quality player to fill a hole they couldn't adequately address in March or during the draft.

These two available players can be the final pieces a team needs to make that last push to the postseason.

Marcus McNeill, OT

McNeill, 28, has been a staple on a solid San Diego Chargers line for the last six years. At 6'7'' and 335 pounds, he's a physically imposing left tackle that plays with pure power and deals with speed rushers with deceptively quick footwork.

He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2006 and 2007 and has started a respectable 82 games in six years, which averages out to just under 14 contests per season.

The former Auburn Tiger has spinal stenosis, or a narrowing of the spine, that has the Chargers, and presumably many other teams, worried about his future stability playing football.

He missed seven games last season due to a stinger injury.

Any club would be taking an obvious risk with McNeill, but if he's healthy, it'll get an inexpensive 28-year-old left tackle with Pro Bowl talent.

With passing on the upturn in the NFL, you can never have too much offensive line depth.

Braylon Edwards, WR

Edwards is coming off of a disappointing 2011 with the San Francisco 49ers in which he only caught 15 passes for 181 yards.

But in 2010, the third pick of the 2005 NFL draft had 53 receptions for 904 yards and seven touchdowns.

At 6'3'' and 215 pounds, he's a terrific red-zone target, and he's always used his big body well to shield defenders when attacking the ball at its highest point down the field.

Because he hasn't garnered much attention during the offseason, he could be signed to a relatively cheap contract at this point.

If nothing else, he could become a quality veteran voice in a younger receiving corps and contribute inside the 20-yard line.

He's past the prime of his career, but in the right system, he could be a productive No. 3 wideout.
