Roger Clemens Trial: Kirk Radomski's Frank Testimony Buries Clemens' Defense

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Roger Clemens' defense lawyers have crafted a great plan to make sure their client comes out of his perjury trial free and clear. One thing they probably weren't counting on was the testimony of a former bat boy to turn everything on its head.

Kirk Radomski, who once served as a bat boy for the New York Mets, took the stand on Tuesday and talked in detail about his relationship with Brian McNamee, Clemens' former trainer, and delivering performance-enhancing drugs to the seven-time Cy Young winner's house.

Radomski said he shipped human growth hormone to Clemens’ Houston home in 2003 and that he recognized needles and steroid ampoules that Brian McNamee provided to investigators in 2008. Radomski said he had sold the materials to the Yankees’ one-time assistant strength and conditioning coach, Clemens’ chief steroid accuser in the Mitchell Report.

"

The report also states that in cross-examination, Clemens' team tried to portray Radomski as a "major dope dealer who built his Long Island home with ill-gotten drug profits." He fired back by throwing up his hands and saying, "These are the hands of a hard-working guy."

Another major point from Radomski came when he talked about an envelope he found with shipping receipts that he had sent to players around the country.

"

Radomski said that in 2008, he found an envelope containing several shipping receipts from PED packages he sent to ballplayers around the country. One of those packages, with “Hold for B. McNamee” scrawled on it, was sent to Clemens’ home. Radomski, who pleaded guilty to distribution of a controlled substance and money laundering in 2007, said investigators didn’t find the envelope when they searched his home two years earlier because it apparently had slipped under a heavy TV in his bedroom.

"

Given the way this trial has been going so far, Radomski's testimony has to be considered a big win for the prosecution. He is a credible witness with a past history involving bodybuilding and performance-enhancing drugs.

For Clemens, his team has to get back to work thinking about their next line of defense. He may have already had his big win of the trial, when his former teammate Andy Pettitte reversed course in his testimony last week.

Radomski has put the Clemens' camp back on their heels by providing specific detailed answers to his relationship with McNamee and performance-enhancing drugs.

It will be interesting to see how much longer this trial goes on, especially after Judge Reggie Walton also scolded the defense for questions he did not feel were relevant to the case.
