Arsene Wenger Right to Fear Roy Hodgson Send-off Against West Bromwich Albion

James DudkoJun 7, 2018

The Daily Mirror recently reported that Arsene Wenger is wary about the possibility of West Brom's players trying to send-off new England manager Roy Hodgson with a win. Wenger is right to fear this kind of emotional lift in the crucial season finale.

Emotion is the one thing Arsenal have played with too little of during the last four games. They have been static and one-paced in the vital areas of the pitch and have frequently been beaten to the ball by the opposition.

Based on their current form, the last thing Arsenal need is to face a side that has been provided extra impetus by their manager's imminent departure to lead England in Euro 2012. Against a team playing with such motivation, there will be no room for the type of cavalier and lethargic play displayed by several key Arsenal players against Norwich City.

Alex Song will not be able to dwell on the ball in midfield, his passing must be quick and precise. Wojciech Szczesny won't be able to risk his worryingly casual approach to shot-stopping. And Kieran Gibbs will have to be more decisive in the challenge.

Aside from any extra effort West Brom will produce in their manager's finale, Hodgson's tactical acumen presents a difficult enough challenge. Wenger has won only one of his last four away games against Hodgson coached teams.

The Gunners have often found themselves stifled by crowded midfields that have closed off the avenues for through passes. West Brom have a compact and technically proficient midfield, led by the likes of Chris Brunt and Graham Dorrans.

Wenger will have to encourage his team to dictate possession and improve their movement off the ball. Only by creating early chances can Arsenal take the initiative away from West Brom in what is sure to be an emotionally charged farewell at the Hawthornes.
