Kentucky Derby Hats: Images of Saturday's Most Outrageous Headwear

Big, floppy hats and the Kentucky Derby go hand in hand.  For women and hat enthusiasts the Kentucky Derby is much more than a horse race, it is a fashion show.

The Kentucky Derby is an opportunity for women to make a fashion statement through their hats, and unfortunately for some, they end up conveying the wrong message.  Every year there are plenty of outrageous hats at the Kentucky Derby, and inside I break down some of this year's most ridiculous looks.    

No. 10

This hat has it all.  It's big, it's colorful and it's got all the feathers one could want.  However, it gets downgraded for its practical nature; it blocks the sun and the owner can see out of it.

Outrageous score: 6/10 

No. 9

A big, floppy, pink hat with a bouquet of flowers on it? Sounds perfect.  Why one would need all those flowers on their hat is beyond me, though.  Again, this hat gets downgraded for its practicality, as the owner can see from underneath it and will have no problems with the sun.

Outrageous score: 6.5/10

No. 8

Apparently it is mandatory for all hats to have some sort of decoration on them.  In this instance, the owner went with an obnoxious amount of feathers.  They decided to embrace the peacock arrangement, utilizing the blue and black feathers to really make the hat pop.  

Outrageous score: 6.75/10

No. 7

Finally, a hat that is so big the owner can't even see out of it.  Our owner also managed to combine feathers and ribbon into an obnoxious pink monstrosity that really stands out.

This is my favorite hat out of the bunch.  Clearly, this owner wants no part in watching the race, and is focused solely on catching some shut eye.

Now we are starting to get into the completely ridiculous hats.  Apparently, this owner is eschewing the traditional big, floppy hat, and is attempting to start a new fashion trend.  She sees a minimalist statement, I see a hat that looks like a cupcake.

Outrageous Score: 8/10

Our last owner isn't alone, as we have another hat attempting to embrace minimalism, while actually appearing as a baked good.  The large, ornate bow set against the white hat screams cake, and since cake is better than a cupcake, this hat gets the nod.

No. 3

This hat is hilarious.  The enormous green base with the multicolored flowers on top is a bold statement, but it is the braids coming off the side that really put this one over the top.

Outrageous Score: 8.5/10    

No. 2

This one is great.  As opposed to wearing the traditional hat, this woman decided to go the complete opposite way, and abscond from wearing a hat altogether, focusing solely on the accessories.  And she has them all with the ribbon, flower, feathers, and whatever that black thing is.

Outrageous Score: 9.5/10

No. 1

Now, this is a masterpiece.  Bold yellow, blue and pink feathers offset by the black really make this "hat" jump out.  This hat brings absolutely nothing to the table, and is easily the most outrageous.  A true tour de force.
