LSU Football: Why Signing Jordan Jefferson Is a Joke

Jake MartinJun 7, 2018

Much to the surprise of every LSU fan on the planet, Jordan Jefferson is expected to sign with an NFL team.

According to the league's official website, that team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The former LSU quarterback is expected to compete for the third-string quarterback position on the depth chart.

After hearing this news, I couldn't help but grin from cheek to cheek in absolute astonishment. After all, if the guy couldn't cut it on the collegiate level, how in the world is he going to perform against the greatest athletes in the world?

Jefferson was awarded with one opportunity after another, and he continuously disappointed. He's an option quarterback that doesn't know how to run the option, and his pocket presence is quite possibly the worst I've ever seen.

It's harsh, but it's the truth. These aren't bitter words—these are the words of a guy who's given this quarterback chance after chance to prove him wrong. He never did.

Following Jarrett Lee's horrendous freshman season in which he threw multiple pick sixes and 16 total interceptions, fans were lenient with Jefferson.

As a sophomore, Jefferson threw 17 touchdowns and only seven interceptions, but he had no pocket presence. With an offensive line that was very capable, Jefferson was sacked 34 times, and he couldn't run the option to save his life.

Things got worse in his junior year. Jefferson made more poor decisions and threw more interceptions than touchdowns. He was then involved in an offseason incident that put LSU in a hole. The Tigers didn't sweat it with Lee under center, and he led them to an undefeated season.

That is, until the Tigers played Alabama on Nov. 5, and Lee struggled. From that point on, Jefferson regained his starting position.

It felt like Les Miles was just waiting for Lee to slip up so that he could place Jefferson back into the starting role. The Tigers had enough talent around him to get to the 2011 BCS National Championship.

The rest is history. Jefferson turned in one of the worst performances in championship history. To this day, Jefferson just might be the most notorious player in LSU history, and this is the player that the Bucs are inheriting.

They should have stopped while they were ahead when they signed Eric LeGrand last week.
