Kentucky Derby 2012 Results: Hansen and Horses That Left a Lot to Be Desired
The 138th Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs definitely lived up to the pre-race hype, even though it was the relatively unknown I'll Have Another surging past heavy favorite Bodemeister (4-1) on the final furlong to take the Kentucky Derby by 1 1/2 lengths.
Where I'll Have Another succeeded as an underdog with 15-1 odds at the sound of the gun, a majority of the favorites like Union Rags (5-1) fell flat and left supporters disappointed, asking why and how?
Take a look at a few of Saturday's competitors that left something to be desired.
Daddy Nose Best (10th)
Daddy Nose Best was coming off two 2012 season wins in the Grade III El Camino Real Derby and Grade III Sunland Derby in February and March. Daddy Nose Best even placed sixth in last fall's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf race at Churchill Downs.
Daddy Nose Best had 14-1 odds entering his post, but any chance he had of challenging the front-runners went away when he fell back into the pack as the home stretch of the two-minute race reared its head.
Hansen (9th)
The 2011 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner at Churchill Downs last November had 13-1 odds entering his post, but mustered up just a disappointing ninth place finish at the Derby. Though Hansen looked a little out of sorts on his way to the post and the NBC commentators made note of it, he had been under similar pressure just months ago at the same venue and won.
Gemologist (16th)
Gemologist's odds got worse as Saturday wore on, ultimately stabilizing at 18-1 right before the race. He was coming off two really strong outings previously, finishing first at the Grade I Wood Memorial last April and the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club last November at Churchill Downs.
Gemologist was trained by notable horseman Todd Pletcher, who won the 2010 Kentucky Derby with Super Saver. Gemologist's slide from favorite to underdog that began Saturday afternoon makes plenty of sense in hindsight, but nonetheless his effort at the Derby left a whole lot to be desired from those who watched.
