Kentucky Derby Payouts: Favorites Who Burned Bettors on Derby Day

Mike MoraitisJun 2, 2018

I'll Have Another's victory at the 2012 Kentucky Derby was certainly a surprise to your average bettor, but what was more of a surprise was how some of the top horses fared.

There were several disappointments in this year's field that left every bettor scratching their head in disbelief when the race was over.

Union Rags

Um, hello, Union Rags? Are you there?

While I watched the pre-race video of Union Rags' last race before the Kentucky Derby, it was clear this horse was an incredible runner with the ability to run a longer race and still finish near the top.

But such an ability was never in display today and, instead, Union Rags was trapped in the back of the pack for the majority of the race. There was never even a flash of brilliance throughout in the seventh-place finish.

There are a ton of angry bettors tonight thanks to one horse.

Gemologist

Todd Pletcher's horse was thought to be an under-whelming favorite amongst racing fans, and it seemed Gemologist was primed to make a run into history.

Instead, Gemologist finished a depressing 16th and never showed even a glimpse of greatness. It left bettors wondering what went wrong with a horse they slated to finish anywhere in their top-three.

Take Charge Indy

Having beaten a Derby favorite in a previous race, Union Rags, Take Charge Indy seemed to be the trendy pick coming up to post time.

Now we can all see just how Take Charge Indy defeated Union Rags.

Finishing in 19th, Take Charge Indy will forever be the curse word of a fan who placed a last-minute bet on a whim. While the return was promising, it seemed the result wasn't worth the potential reward.
