Kentucky Derby Results: Bodemeister Will Avenge Loss at Preakness

Alex HallJun 2, 2018

While I'll Have Another gave everyone something to chat about at the water cooler Monday, his last-second hysterics won't work on the shortest track in the Triple Crown race in the Preakness. Bodemeister showed the nation today that if this was a race the length of the Preakness, he would be the one blowing up Twitter and being etched next time names like Barbaro and Ferdinand in Derby allure.

But that's all right, because if Bodemeister can duplicate his performance at Kentucky down over in Maryland, he'll spoil I'll Have Another's hopes of becoming the first Triple Crown champion since Affirmed in 1978.

"Bode feels a lot of pressure right now," said Bode Baffert, the seven-year-old the horse was named, after told the Huffington Post.

While that pressure probably came into play toward the end of the race, when it appeared Bodemeister's knees were buckling, there's no reason that with time to recuperate and a gameplan, the experienced team behind the Derby's second-place horse will take the Preakness stakes.

Mike Smith is a Hall of Fame jockey and knows how to get his horse motivated, and that's exactly what he'll do with Bodemeister before and during their trip to Maryland. If it weren't for the last few seconds of the Derby, Bodemeister would have had one of the more dominating victories that track has seen in recent years.

Heading into the Preakness, all eyes will be on I'll Have Another in hopes of seeing a possible Triple Crown run, which means there will be less pressure around Smith and Bodemeister. With a shorter track and a clearer mindset, the duo of the Hall of Fame rider and fast-accelerating horse should be a winning combination in Maryland.
