Kentucky Derby Undercard 2012: Horses to Watch for in Grade 1 Sprint
The main event of the Kentucky Derby is the one we all tune in to watch at Churchill Downs, but there are a few horses on the undercard worth watching.
The $500,000 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic features some of the world's best sprinters—both male and female—and this race has been an exciting one to watch in years' past. It is a 1.125-mile run—one-eighth of a mile shorter than the main event.
While one-eighth of a mile may not seem like much of a difference, for the horses running the race, it can be all the difference in the world.
These sprinters have a fantastic chance to win this year's Woodford Reserve Turf Classic.
Turallure
Turallure is a five-year-old male who's a bit late in developing. He has come on incredibly strong of late, winning the Woodbine Mile last September and coming in with close seconds in both the Breeders’ Cup Mile and Maker’s 46 Mile last month at Keeneland.
He is the son of Canadian Champion Wando. Turallure prefers short sprints and is an exceptionally fast starter.
He is the favorite to win the race, coming in at 5/2 odds.
Data Link
This four-year old colt should be the favorite to win. He beat Turrallure in the Makers' 46 Mile last month by a neck—his first Grade 1 victory.
Data Link has won five out of his last eight races, and his ability to set the pace in fast races makes him one of the most exciting horses to watch in the race.
Data Link is being given 4/1 odds in this race.
Get Stormy
This horse isn't as well-regarded as he should be, perhaps due to a recent six-month layoff and the fact that he's a bit older, at six years old.
Get Stormy has a track record of success in Grade 1 races, though, having won over $1.5 million and winning three times at this level. He has never finished outside the money at this distance and would be a safe bet.
Get Stormy is being given 6-1 odds in this race.
