Virginia Tech Football Recruiting: Hokies Land Hampton's Deon Newsome

Blake SilversJun 4, 2018

On Thursday, Hampton athlete Deon Newsome (@dnewsome_5) tweeted his college choice saying "Feels good to be a #Hokie."

Deon, a three-star recruit from Hampton High School, is the son of former Hokie Myron Newsome, who played linebacker in his time at Virginia Tech.

Newsome brings the 2013 Hokie recruiting class up to 11, passing up his only other major offer, which was from rival Virginia, to play for Frank Beamer, continuing a family tradition in Blacksburg.

His 247Sports.com profile lists Deon at 6'0" and 175 pounds with a 4.5 40-yard time.

How much influence did his father's playing career have on Newsome's decision?  In an interview with Andy Bittner of The Virginian-Pilot, Deon's high school coach Mike Smith addressed that question, saying:

"

"His dad let him make his mind up.  He really didn’t get in the mix too much. But I think he had those bloodlines in him. And he really liked his visit to Tech academically for what he wanted to do construction engineering or something. He really liked what he saw there."

"

It might be noted that Deon's father is also a member of Hampton's coaching staff.

It is unclear how Newsome might be used by the Hokies, but he is listed as a running back, wide receiver and corner by various recruiting outlets.
