Kentucky Derby 2012 Horses: Trinniberg and Colts to Bet Against

Josh MartinJun 7, 2018

Forget about trying to pick the winner of the 2012 Kentucky Derby. There are at least 10 horses (out of 20 in the field) who could realistically finish first in the "Run for the Roses" on Saturday.

Now, if you're looking for entrants who won't win, then you'd be wise to consider any (or all) of these three.

Trinniberg

Trinniberg may well be the best bet in the field to finish last. He's a speedster capable of lighting up the track on any given day.

Trouble is, he's never run more than seven furlongs. As such, don't be surprised if Trinniberg drifts toward the back of the pack before the far turn.

Take Charge Indy

Post 3 might actually be a good spot for a horse like Trinniberg, but certainly not for Take Charge Indy. He doesn't have quite the speed to keep up with most pacesetters, a fact which may force him to exert himself too much too early on.

In a perfect world, Take Charge Indy would prefer to take charge late rather than try to jump out early, as he'll likely have to on Saturday.

I'll Have Another

There's nothing wrong with I'll Have Another, per se. He won handily at the Florida Derby, showing off the speed needed to win at Churchill Downs, and hung tight at the Breeders' Cup in November.

What's the problem then? He's breaking from post 19...and nobody's ever won the Derby from post 19.

Ever. In 137 previous races.

On the bright side, I'll Have Another is quicker than several of the horses to his inside, so he might be able to keep up for a bit.
