Kentucky Derby 2012 Odds: Under-the-Radar Racers Sure to Shine on Saturday

Cole DolanJun 7, 2018

While the 138th Kentucky Derby field is highlighted by Bodemeister, Union Rags and Creative Cause, an average horse out of the field with a good post position could provide fans with an upset.

This year's Kentucky Derby appears to be one of the most open fields in recent history.

While the odds may be against these horses, they are still very capable of turning some high-risk bets into some high-reward fortunes.

Take Charge Indy

After a huge upset of Union Rags at the Florida Derby, Take Charge Indy put himself right at the top of the list of potential surprises in this year's Kentucky Derby. The biggest advantage for this horse is the experience of jockey Calvin Borel.

Borel is a three-time Kentucky Derby winner and has proven to be one of the best riders at Churchill Downs.

The problem is that Take Charge Indy is a speed horse that needs to break away early and maintain a lead and breaking away from this year's field simply won't happen.

However, if the race develops in the right way for Borel, don't be surprised if Take Charge Indy can move up into the top-three and perhaps even steal a victory.

I'll Have Another

This horse's stock has slipped recently, but it seems to be more of a product of the emergence of other favorites than poor racking by I'll Have Another. The horse has been a great racer thus far, but has seemingly been defined by his bad race in the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga.

Though it was a very sloppy track and I'll Have Another has gone on to do very well in other races, he hasn't been able to catch the eye of the public.

If the track conditions are solid, a top-three finish by I'll Have Another would surely be one of the bigger surprises on Saturday.

A win, and I'll Have Another may very well be able to escape the sixth-place finish at Saratoga that has haunted him his entire career.

Went The Day Well

If the track is sloppy, replacing I'll Have Another with Went The Day Well may could be a well placed bet. This horse's odds are 20/1 heading into Saturday, but could turn out to be one of the better runners on a muddy track.

Practice runs have been wet thus far, and Went The Day Well has shown absolutely no signs of problems "clodding" his way around the 1.25 mile track.

On dry ground this horse just simply doesn't have enough to compete with some of the favorites, but if the track is nasty on Saturday then he could turn out to be one of the biggest high-risk/high-reward plays in the 2012 Kentucky Derby.
