4 Teams That Will Be out of the ESPN College Football Live Poll After Week 1

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

As each day goes by, we get that much closer to the college football regular season kicking off. We also get closer to the polls being released to see where our favorite teams currently sit as far as the college football world is concerned.

ESPN couldn't wait that long and has decided to release its own preseason poll to try and build up some of that excitement.

While the arguments will begin with who deserves to be ranked where and who doesn't belong in the poll at all, the fact is that some of these teams won't be ranked once Week 1 of the college football season comes to an end. This could be due to a loss, bad performance against a cupcake team or just an unranked team playing so well they knocked a ranked team off the board.

Even though we're still months away from the regular season taking place, here are four teams from the ESPN poll that won't be ranked after Week 1.

Boise State

How is this team even ranked to begin with? Somebody needs to tell ESPN that the Broncos no longer have Kellen Moore at quarterback. Or running back Doug Martin, or wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker, or a majority of their defense.

This is a team that's lost nearly its entire roster in one season. The Broncos don't have an answer at quarterback yet, and they don't have depth at the running back position. They don't even have a legitimate answer for their kicker yet.

You add all that up and the fact they open up the season against Michigan State (a defensive team that returns eight starters on that side of the ball), and you have yourself a loss and a Broncos team that drops out of the Top 25.

Notre Dame

This may be a stretch, but if you look at their history under head coach Brian Kelly, maybe not so much. The Irish, of course, are a talented team, but the last two seasons they have struggled mightily out of the gate. We all know about the 0-2 start last season, when they turned the ball over five teams each and lost to teams they should have beaten with their eyes closed.

But in 2010, they started the season off with a 1-3 record.

Could they possibly lose to Navy in Week 1? I'm pretty sure it's possible.

Navy is a team that takes what is given to it and eats the clock up with its ridiculous running game. If the Irish continue their turnover ways, things could get ugly. Not to mention, Navy has won three of the last five meetings against the Irish.

Am I brave enough to pick the Midshipmen in an upset? Possibly.

Virginia Tech

3 of 4

One of the underrated games of Week 1 of the regular season is when Virginia Tech takes on Georgia Tech on a Monday night. Everybody may just assume the Hokies are going to win, but some love needs to be shown to this Yellow Jackets team.

This is a squad that returns eight starters on the offensive side of the ball, including dual-threat quarterback Tevin Washington. The Hokies also return seven starters from a defense that was ranked fifth in the ACC last season and held an explosive Clemson offense to just 17 points.

With the game being played in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech will likely be the favorites heading into the matchup, but I'll take the team that's balanced on both sides of the ball, instead of the one searching for offense (Virginia Tech only returns three starters on the offensive side of the ball).

No, Florida will not lose to Bowling Green. (At least I hope not. If so, they should just cancel the rest of the season and be banned from the SEC for the minimum of two years.) But a victory over the Green Falcons isn't impressive enough to keep them in the Top 25.

I'd have to assume that there is another team out there somewhere that will beat a school impressive enough to sneak into the rankings. If this is the case, the Gators may be one of the first teams that will have to wait to beat a quality opponent to become ranked again.
