Kentucky Derby 2012 Post Positions: Field Announced for 138th Running of Derby

The 138th running of the Kentucky Derby is only a few days away, but we finally have a settled field as the posts have been drawn, painting a clear picture of what to expect. 

This is an exciting field that features clear favorites and some sneaky-hot horses that can give us all a jolt of excitement like Animal Kingdom did a year ago. 

On Wednesday, the posts were drawn and here is how the thoroughbreds will stack up moments before the most exciting two minutes in sports commences on Saturday.

Contenders

Union Rags and Bodemeister will be the two thoroughbreds that millions will have their money on, and for good reason. 

Despite a No. 6 post draw, Bodemeister is still a danger to compete for the front from the start. He can err on the side of lazy in training, but Bob Baffert is pleased with what he has seen recently from his prized horse. 

Long Shots

I really like Went the Day Well who may be looking to take the same path as Animal Kingdom, the three-year-old also took the Spiral Stakes. 

The really interesting horse is Trinniberg, a pure sprinter whose only issue will be endurance. It's clear his camp is confident in Trinniberg's wind, making him a very clear favorite from the myriad of longshots. 

Prediction

Union Rags, Dullhan and Bodemeister are clumped together from the start. That should make for an exciting battle to begin the Derby.

With a favorable draw, I like Gemologist from the outside to sneak ahead and control the race late.
