Undrafted Talent That Will Bolster Struggling Rosters

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

Victor Cruz, Arian Foster, Miles Austin, Wes Welker and Fred Jackson.

Just a few NFL studs that somehow went undrafted.

With the 2012 draft complete, all 32 organizations are scrounging the undrafted free-agent market in hopes of uncovering the next Antonio Gates—another player not selected in the draft the year he entered the NFL.

Insane.

These players will bolster some of the struggling rosters around the league.

Jarrett Boykin, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars

For Virginia Tech in 2011, Boykin led the team with 61 receptions and tied for the team lead with five receiving touchdowns.

He contributed to the Hokies for four full seasons, so he certainly has experience.

At 6'1'' and 207 pounds, he has good size.

Due to a slower 40-yard dash time, Boykin projects solely as a possession receiver at the next level.

For a team desperately searching for more talented wideouts, Boykin has a legitimate chance to make the roster and become a nice secondary option to Justin Blackmon and Laurent Robinson.

Griff Whalen, WR, Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are intelligently trying to make Andrew Luck's transition to the NFL as smooth as possible by adding his former Stanford teammates to the roster.

The somewhat lanky 6'1'', 185-pound receiver led the team with 56 grabs and 749 receiving yards last season.

His 13.4-yards-per-catch average indicates he's more of a chain-moving target than anything else, but that's totally fine.

He and Luck have an established rapport, and providing the new franchise quarterback with another familiar target is smart.

Whalen needs to add strength, but he has a great shot to make the roster.

Jermaine Kearse, WR, Seattle Seahawks

Kearse is a homegrown prospect who played his college ball at the University of Washington. The 6'1'', 209-pound wideout was a tremendous threat with Jake Locker throwing him passes in 2010. Kearse had 63 receptions for 1,005 yards with 12 touchdowns.

In 2011, his production slipped to 47 catches for 699 yards and seven touchdown grabs with Keith Price under center.

He ran a 4.58 in the 40-yard dash at the combine, but he plays faster than his timed speed.

The Seahawks' receiving corps isn't loaded with stars, so Kearse has a chance to make his mark for one of the NFC's up-and-coming clubs.
