WWE Extreme Rules 2012 Results: CM Punk Officially King of WWE After Win

He may have been overshadowed by Cena-Lesnar, but there is no denying that CM Punk is the face of WWE.

With Extreme Rules held in his hometown of Chicago, Punk was able to outlast Chris Jericho and his “Walls of Jericho” patent move in a gruesome Chicago street fight. It was a terrific display of two of WWE’s best mixing incredible wrestling technique with their high-flying, dangerous stunts.

Punk has now beaten Jericho at both WrestleMania and Extreme Rules, essentially making Y2J’s highly-anticipated comeback much ado about nothing. Punk has single-handedly made Jericho look bad after years of domination and being crowned a WWE champion of his own. This is not how legends are typically treated in this sport.

When was the last time Punk lost a big match? It has been about a year, which is almost unheard of in the WWE universe. Clearly the creative team sees Punk as its most marketable star, and the Punk-train isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

On Monday Night Raw a day after the PPV event, the gimmick was a “beat the clock” sort of tournament where every wrestler tried to pin his opponent as fast as possible just for the chance to wrestle Punk in the Over the Limit PPV scheduled to take place in May.

Everybody wants the chance to wrestle this guy right now, and why wouldn’t they?

So who will be the next feud with Punk? With his complete dominance over Jericho, that one is all but over. Some have suggested that newbie Lord Tensai would be next, but his inability to speak in front of the crowd would really hamper this one. Punk is a maestro on the mic, and talking loads of trash and not getting much of a response would really hurt the hype and build up.

With John Cena’s injury and Brock Lesnar flying off his rocker, there isn’t a single star currently on Punk’s level. Has WWE outdone themselves this time?
