Kentucky Derby 2012: Breaking Down Contenders Ahead of Post Draw
The field is set for the most exciting two minutes in sports, but first comes the Kentucky Derby post draw that will further handicap an amazing and still unfolding story.
The post draw may see some already-stout horses in prime slots out of the gate. The last real change to the odds will happen when the post positions are drawn.
Fans and gamblers will be keyed in on Wednesday as an all-important event that will have Churchill Downs buzzing.
We will know by Wednesday May 2nd at 5:00 p.m. ET the starting position for each horse, but until then, we have the contenders for the 2012 Kentucky Derby.
1. Union Rags:
Meet your favorite in the week before the big race. He is being trained by Michael Matz, the trainer that lived with such success and ultimate sadness alongside Barbaro.
Union Rags isn't just the favorite to lead out. He is also beloved by fans for his trainer's life story, as told in the Chicago Tribune.
2. Bodemeister:
Bodemeister has everything you want in a contender, especially momentum—the son of Empire Maker is running very well right now.
Trainer Bob Baffert will be the first to assign laziness to Bodemeister, but even he is confident after seeing the latest flashes of brilliance.
3. Daddy Nose Best:
Daddy Nose Best is training with immense poise and comfort. His latest stint around the track proves the horse is inching in the right way towards Saturday's start.
4. Gemologist:
He is the most intriguing contender, coming out of the star-studded stable of trainer Todd Pletcher. Gemologist can run hot out of the gate but has proved in the past that he doesn't need the lead to run a successful race.
