Tracking Tennesee Titans' 2012 Undrafted Free-Agent Signings
Undrafted free agents are an important roster-building tool for NFL teams. Most of the players signed after the draft won't make NFL rosters, but a couple from every team will.
Here's a complete list of everyone the Titans have signed, based on team press releases.
Devin Aguilar, WR, Washington
Brandon Barden, TE Vanderbilt
George Bias, T, Stephen F. Austin
Beau Brinkley, TE/LS, Missouri
Chandler Burden, G, Kentucky
Chase Deadder, WR, Sacramento State
DaJohn Harris, DT, Southern Cal
LaQuinton Evans, WR, Southern University
Christian Scott, S, Texas
Nick Stephens, QB, Tarleton State
William Vlachos, C, Alabama
Alex Watkins, LB, Alabama
Darryl Whiting, RB, Fordham
Gary Wilburn, CB, Connecticut
Derrick Woods, WR, Cincinnati
Will Batson, K, North Alabama, (UDFA 2011)
Devin Aguilar, Wide Receiver, Washington
1 of 16Aguilar has limited skills. He has good hands and could see action on third downs. He'll make the team on special teams or not at all.
Odds of Making the Final Roster: Less than five percent
Brandon Barden, Tight End, Vanderbilt
2 of 16"Has a big frame and nice length with room to pack on weight. Fluid strider with good athletic ability and coordination for his body type (see 73-yard TD vs. Wake Forest). Settles into short-to-intermediate zones and presents a sizable target. Works to gain positioning as a blocker and is effective when he has an angle. Durable, smart and confident. Good character.
"
Odds of making the final roster: Less than five percent
George Bias, Tackle, Stephen F. Austin
3 of 16"Long-armed left tackle who can bend his knees and is rarely out of position. Bias moves well enough space to usually recover in time in the rare instances where a pass rusher may get a step on him. The versatile tackle has played on both sides of the line. The bookend blocker has been known to jump offsides during road games.
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: 25 percent
The Titans have excellent starting tackles, but any quality lineman who can play guard and tackle always has a puncher's chance of grabbing a spot.
Beau Brinkley, Tight End/Long Snapper, Missouri
4 of 16"Brinkley handled snaps for Missouri's punt, field goal and PAT units since his freshman year in 2008, whipping the ball between his legs exactly 512 times. Not once did he send a punter or holder scrambling for a wild snap. Not once did he miss his target's hands. Not once did a poor snap contribute to a missed field goal or extra point or blocked kick.
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: 35 percent
Brinkley would have to unseat veteran Ken Amato. It's not likely, but anything is possible.
Chandler Burden, Guard, Kentucky
5 of 16"Adequately sized college tackle who projects to guard in the NFL. Quickly sets up off the snap, keeps his feet moving and immediately gets his hands into opponents. Makes good use of angles, stays square and seals defenders from the action. Fluid moving on his feet and works blocks until the whistle blows. Easily controls defenders once engaged at the point of attack.
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: 40 percent
Burden sounds like exactly the kind of player who could stick with at team. The Titans could use depth at guard, and a big body with upside could fit the bill.
Chase Deadder, Wide Receiver, Sacramento State
6 of 16"As for Deadder, his senior season was injury-plagued, as he played in just six of Sac State's 11 games. He caught 15 passes for 152 yards and four touchdowns.
In 2010, Deadder caught 37 passes for 788 yards and six touchdowns.
Deadder has NFL size at 6 feet 6 inches tall and 215 pounds, which is a plus for him.
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: 20 percent
Receiver is crowded for the Titans. You have to like Deadder's chances of maybe landing on the practice squad because of his size alone.
DaJohn Harris, Defensive Tackle, Southern Cal
7 of 16"Former USC defensive tackle DaJohn Harris was not allowed to work out at the NFL combine last month because doctors found a small hole in his heart during a physical examination in Indianapolis, Harris revealed Wednesday at USC's pro day.
Harris, projected as a mid-round pick in April's draft, visited an Arizona cardiologist with agent Joe Panos shortly after the combine and found that the hole was normal and natural. He said his doctor has since emailed all 32 NFL teams, alerting them of his status and permitting him to work out as usual.
"
Odds of Making Final Roster: 50 percent
Yes, the Titans have a lot of tackles, but Harris is a serious prospect. I expect the Titans to take a long, hard look at him.
LaQuinton Evans, Wide Receiver, Southern University
8 of 16"Adequately sized pass catcher who times well in the 40. Settles into the open spot of the defense, extends his hands to offer the quarterback a target and nicely adjusts to errant throws. Uses his frame to shield away defenders and protect the pass. Gives effort blocking.
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: Less than five percent
He's fast but has little else going for him. The Titans should have a full slate at receiver.
Christian Scott, Safety, Texas
9 of 16"Athletic safety prospect who has flashed skill the past two years. Takes good angles to plays and can go sideline to sideline in center field. Gets outside the numbers to make plays on the pass, quick up the field to defend the run and displays a nice burst of closing speed. Explosive at the point and easily brings ball carriers down on initial contact.
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: 50 percent
Scott sounds exactly like the kind of player who can come in and make a difference on special teams.
Nick Stephens, Quarterback, Tarleton State
10 of 16"An overaged one-time starter at Tennessee, where injury and coaching turnover affected his development, Stephens has bulk and arm talent to attract interest. Shows good arm strength and touch, but needs to improve accuracy and decision making (see red-zone interceptions vs. Abilene Christian). Operated a pass-heavy, shotgun spread and will have to adjust to pro-style, dropback passing to develop into a backup.
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: Less than 5% percent
I can't see him beating out Rusty Smith for the third slot.
William Vlachos, Center, Alabama
11 of 16"While Vlachos has a future in the NFL, it will be tough for an NFL team to fall in love with his skills. He is not going to stand out on game film or impress anyone in workouts. Vlachos isn't the most explosive player and struggles to move defenders off the line. He is more of a zone blocking fit because he can velcro and seal. His lack of athletic ability makes it difficult for him to be effective in space. Vlachos struggles to remain balanced and reach defenders in the 2nd level.
Even with his limitations, Vlachos has a future in the NFL. His technically sound play will allow him to make the necessary blocks. However, he will only be successful in the right system which limits his versatility. His lack of versatility will limit the interested teams.
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: 50 percent
Center is a huge need for the Titans, and they didn't grab one in the draft. Would anyone truly be stunned if Eugene Amano lost his job to a young rookie?
Alex Watkins, Linebacker, Alabama
12 of 16"“Alex Watkins is an amazing guy.
"
“He has been a great leader for this group, and really cares about the team. He has done so many good things to affect other people.”
Offensive guard Chance Warmack agrees that “Alex is just amazing, man. He’s made player of the week twice with a messed up knee and then he broke his arm in season. He’s just a phenomenal guy. Nice person. He’s just amazing. That’s the best way I can put it. Amazing guy and hard worker."
Odds of Making the Final Roster: 45 percent
Forget need. Forget skill. This guy loves to hit, has high character and loves special teams. The NFL has a place for men like that.
Darryl Whiting, Running Back, Fordham
13 of 16"Also played basketball as a New York prep. Appeared in two games as a freshman in 2008 and rushed four times for 11 yards (2.8-yard average) and no touchdowns. Led the team in rushing in ’09, despite starting only two games, with 132-681-5 (5.2) in 11 contests. Again led the squad in rushing in ’10 after piling up 169-771-8 (4.6) in 10 games (three starts). Gained 251 yards on 38 carries against Georgetown. Has 13 career catches for 78 yards (6.0-yard average)
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: Less than five percent
I'm just not seeing it.
Gary Wilburn, Cornerback, Connecticut
14 of 16"Well Wilburn certainly proved he’s an athlete. Those numbers he put up at UConn’s Pro Day were pretty real and he did it front of at least 32 NFL reps who were on hand in Storrs a little over a month ago.
Wilburn had a 4.46 40, a 39-inch vertical jump, 10-6 on the broad jump and had 24 reps of 225 pounds to lead all participants in three of the four big events.
Many will argue the athleticism did not transfer over to consistent efforts on the field. Wilburn will not.
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: 35 percent
He's got the physical tools to play at the next level. If he has the will, he will.
Derrick Woods, Wide Receiver, Cincinnati
15 of 16Who He Might Resemble
""I'm very humbled but someone like a Victor Cruz. I've been watching a whole bunch of film on him, his route running, technique, speed off the ball and being physical. I'm nowhere near Victor Cruz but I put a lot of hard work and dedication into what I do.
"
Odds of Making the Final Roster: Less than five percent
I'm not seeing any of the undrafted free agents sticking, but Woods has a nice resume.
Will Batson, Kicker, North Alabama, (UDFA 2011)
16 of 16Batson was undrafted in 2011 but was signed by the Titans.
Odds of Making the Final Roster: Less than five percent
He's an emergency camp kicker/punter. Someone would have to get hurt.
