Kentucky Derby 2012: Long Shots to Bet on Before Draw Changes Odds

The Kentucky Derby is running this Saturday, but the hopeful winners will not know their starting position until the draw on Wednesday.

Because position is so important with such a big field, some horses are bound to go down in odds if they are located away from the rail.

Let’s take a look at some long shots that could be worth a gamble now, hoping that they get a great position and a good chance to win.

Hero of Order – 100/1

Think this bet is insane? It might be, considering that Hero of Order needs some luck to even get into the field. However, if he does, look out.

Hero of Order won the Louisiana Derby on April 1, going off at a ridiculous 109-to-1 and by far the longest shot in the 13-horse competition.

He’s used to being the underdog and isn’t afraid to step up to the spotlight while everyone doubts and bets on some other pony.

While it’ll be a lot tougher for Hero to pull off the impossible as the longest shot in the field again, some luck in the draw and some willpower is all he needs. 

Done Talking – 50/1

This horse was born to go long distance and the Run for the Roses could be his. Hamilton Smith will be aboard the colt on Saturday and looking to win his first Triple Crown race as well.

The two combined could result in a first-place finish.

The knock on Done Talking is his speed and handicappers just haven’t seen the Beyer required from a winner. If he can kick it up a notch, you never know what will happen.

Trinniberg – 45/1

This horse is a straight-up burner that many handicappers feel will die out before the finish line. It would be crazy to think that the owners are carting him in from Miami in order to falter.

They know this horse can run the 1.25-mile race and be adorned with roses at the end of it. If Trinniberg gets a good draw, he’s a great bet to sprint through this thing.
