NFL Draft Grades: 5 Teams That Failed Their Fanbases

Daniel KockJun 5, 2018

This year's NFL draft is thought to be a deep one, but some teams failed to properly address their needs with quality players.

Now that the draft is over, it's time to breakdown the selections and analyze the winners and losers.

The top organizations build the majority of their team through the draft, which makes it vital to select wisely.

Unfortunately for some fanbases, they shouldn't feel too confident about their team's direction heading into the offseason.

Lack of picks, reaching for a pick or failing to meet team needs are few of the ways for an organization to fail at the draft.

Here's a look at five teams that did just that.

1. Chicago Bears

1 of 5

The Chicago Bears make this list primarily for the reason of not addressing a team need.

The Bears offensive line isn't good, and the Bears did nothing in the draft to fix that.

They selected linebacker Shea McClellin with their first-round draft choice, which came as a surprise to many.

The Bears needed another pass rusher so it wasn't surprising they selected one, but the choice of McClellin was baffling.

McClellin will play defensive end for the Bears in the 4-3, but seemed to be a better fit to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 system.

Their later selections of Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Hardin are risky picks that could bust. They traded up to select Jeffery who is coming off a disappointing year, while Hardin missed the entire season to a shoulder injury.

The Bears didn't use one of their last three selections on an offensive lineman, which is what landed them on this list.

2. New Orleans Saints

2 of 5

The New Orleans Saints' rough offseason continued at the draft.

The Saints didn't have a first-round pick because of trading up to take Mark Ingram last year and lost their second-round pick due to bounty-gate.

The lack of early picks cost the Saints a chance to get a significant contributor.

They selected defensive tackle Akiem Nicks in the third round, who left LSU to play in Canada. Nick Toon should turn out to be a reliable receiver for the Saints, but he's not going to wow anyone with his athleticism.

Nicks is a raw player who will need time to develop, and the Saints could've used their fourth-round pick on a defensive end or cornerback instead of adding to a position where they already have depth.

Overall, the Saints' draft class appears to be lacking impact players for the 2012 season.

3. Oakland Raiders

3 of 5

No surprise to find the Oakland Raiders making this list.

The Raiders have surprised people in the past with their selections and have failed with many of their picks.

Like the Saints, the Raiders didn't pick until the third round, and also lack an impact player for the 2012 season.

The Raiders drafted offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom, who should play a role on the offensive line.

However, there doesn't appear to be any other potential starters in this draft class.

New GM Reggie McKenzie didn't have much to work with and it's not his fault the team lacked picks in his first draft for the Raiders.

Once again, a team that lacked picks due to trades failed to significantly upgrade the talent of their team.

4. Miami Dolphins

Some people love quarterback Ryan Tannehill while others hate him.

The Miami Dolphins are the former and took him with the No. 8 pick on Thursday night. However, Tannehill looks to be a project as he used to play wide receiver.

The Dolphins have desperately been searching for a franchise quarterback since Dan Marino, and I don't see Tannehill being that guy for them.

Tannehill has potential but didn't close out games for Texas A&M this past season.

Their second-round pick was a very good one in tackle Jonathan Martin. The Dolphins got good value with that choice, and Martin should be able to start on the right side.

Lamar Miller is a good player that the Dolphins took in the fourth round, but he's very similar to Dolphins running back Reggie Bush.

The Dolphins needed an inside-the-tackles type runner rather than another speed back.

However, the development of Ryan Tannehill will determine whether the 2012 NFL Draft was a successful one or a failure.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars

5 of 5

The Jacksonville Jaguars make this list because of one selection.

Trading up to take receiver Justin Blackmon should turn out to be a good move for the Jaguars and gives Blaine Gabbert a No. 1 target.

However, there is no reason to select a punter in the third round.

The Jaguars selected Bryan Anger out of Cal with the 70th pick in the draft. Anger is a good punter who averaged 43.7 yards a punt in 2011 and can also directional kick.

The 2012 draft is considered to be very deep with plenty of quality players, and the Jaguars wasted an opportunity to grab one of those players.

Even if Anger makes the Pro Bowl, there is no justification for drafting a punter that high.

The Jaguars will be punting a lot this season due to bad draft selections like this.
