Mr. Irrelevant 2012: Chandler Harnish Is Ideal Selection for Last Pick Award
2012's Mr. Irrelevant award couldn't have gone to a better team, player and situation.
Chandler Harnish, a former star quarterback at Northern Illinois, was selected by the Indianapolis Colts with the 253rd overall pick—a full 252 picks after the Colts selected Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick.
In this particular case, we could call Luck "Mr. Relevant," as Harnish now plays the same position for the same team.
A four-year starter for the Huskies, Harnish set 30 total records at his now former school and was a do-it-all player who was anything but irrelevant.
Now he joins the NFL as a guy who'll be lucky just to play behind Andrew Luck. Being dubbed Mr. Irrelevant, there couldn't be a more fitting situation.
He'll hope to land the long-term backup position for Luck as his best-case scenario. The Colts kept Jim Sorgi in Indianapolis behind Peyton Manning for six seasons, and although this is a different coach, regime and team altogether, they'd love to find another long-term backup for their rookie starter as soon as possible.
Harnish will compete with Drew Stanton and Trevor Vittatoe.
The 23-year-old Indiana native grew up a Colts fan and was quoted by Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune saying:
""Then out of the blue came that call from Indianapolis—my hometown favorite team. I’ve always loved the Colts, so it is a very easy transition for me. I don’t have to buy any new clothing. I have multiple shirts and hats and anything in-between. I have Colts sandals. I have plenty of Colts gear."
"
Now he'll get to wear that gear as Mr. Irrelevant, which fits just perfectly for him.
