Robert Griffin III: Redskins Drafting Kirk Cousins Will Motivate RG3

Justin WeltonJun 1, 2018

When Washington traded up to the No. 2 spot in the 2012 NFL draft to get Robert Griffin III, it told Redskins fans that this is our franchise quarterback.

Several hours later, in the fourth round, Washington decided to throw a curve ball by selecting Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins with the 102nd pick.

Huh?

How will this impact the confidence level of Griffin? That's the big question. Will he constantly be looking over his shoulder asking "what if I play horrible?"

He'll be fine. This will motivate Griffin more than ever before.

He's the type of character that strives for success; nothing else matters if the Redskins aren't winning games. Washington will win football games with Griffin at the helm, not Cousins.

Griffin won't allow this to be an issue whatsoever.

This may actually be a blessing in disguise for RGIII. Placing a young quarterback in the system behind Griffin won't allow him to simply be satisfied by being a starting quarterback in the NFL, even though I didn't see that happening.

It's a move that tells Griffin that no thing is certain in the NFL; a wake-up call, so to speak.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock thinks drafting Cousins is a good idea, according to Graham Couch of MLive.com.

"

"To me it’s an insurance policy that you develop," Mayock said. "And if he puts the baseball cap on for four years, and never gets to the field, that’s great. However, year three, if (Griffin) goes down — and he’s gonna take a lot of hits, RGIII’s gonna take a lot of hits — if he goes down year three, you’ve got a developed quarterback behind him ready to go. ... There’s no greater depth need for me on any team than the backup quarterback."

"

Mayock is correct in his evaluation of the pick. You never know what will happen with quarterbacks in the NFL, but they are the most important position to have depth because of injuries.

I don't think we will ever see Cousins at quarterback in a Redskins uniform, however.

Griffin will look at this situation, and it will motivate him more to prove his worth.
