NFL Draft 2012 Results: Teams Who Failed to Address Major Needs

Sam R. QuinnJun 7, 2018

The NFL draft is the time of year when teams have the best opportunity to add quality players to their roster. Sometimes, teams fail to address gaping holes on their squads, which is exactly what happened to some teams in the 2012 NFL draft.

Here are a few teams who declined to address their major needs in the early rounds:

The Chiefs drafted Dontari Poe, a defensive tackle out of Memphis who put up eye-popping numbers at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine.

The main problem with Poe is that he's a completely unproven prospect. He rarely shows the ability to clog up the middle like his strength and speed numbers would suggest. He was definitely the riskiest pick in this year's draft.

This pick is reminiscent of the Chiefs' No. 5 overall selection of Glenn Dorsey in 2008. Dorsey has been an adequate interior defensive lineman but not worthy of a top-five selection.

The Chiefs should have gone with David DeCastro, the proven guard out of Stanford.

It would have been somewhat of a surprise to see the Chiefs go with a guard at No. 11, but DeCastro has been the top prospect at his position for awhile. He's even drawn a few comparisons to Steve Hutchinson.

It was puzzling to see the Seahawks trade down for a couple of the Philadelphia Eagles' later-round picks.

By trading down just three spots, the Seahawks effectively removed themselves from a spot in which they could have drafted wide receiver Michael Floyd out of Notre Dame.

They decided to go with Bruce Irvin, a defensive end out of West Virginia. While Irvin is a great prospect, it wouldn't have been a shock to see him still on the board in the second round.

Golden Tate hasn't panned out yet for Seattle. Ben Obomanu isn't anything special. And Sidney Rice has some health concerns.

That leaves budding star Doug Baldwin without much talent opposite him. The Seahawks could have given newly signed quarterback Matt Flynn two viable options at the wide receiver spot.

Instead, they decided to pick up a guy who has a history of character issues.

The Broncos didn't mess up this draft by filling the wrong positions. They messed up by drafting the wrong guys at the right positions.

They picked Derek Wolfe, a solid defensive tackle prospect, but not as good as Michigan State's Jerel Worthy, who was still on the board at the time.

Their second pick of Round 2 was Brock Osweiler, who has the prototypical quarterback build but not the essential tools that other prospects like Kirk Cousins and Nick Foles have.

Broncos brass also failed to pick up another receiver for Peyton Manning. That's not that big of a deal, though, as Manning can make anyone look good.
