2012 NFL Draft Grades: Report Cards for the Weekend's Biggest Winners

Patrick ClarkeMay 31, 2018

The 2012 NFL draft came and went in a flash, and all that's left to do now is assess the wild weekend that was.

There were seismic last-minute trade-ups and head-scratching selections early on in the first round, but ultimately a front office is and will be judged by their overall draft, all seven rounds together as one.

So, which teams aced this weekend's action?

Arizona Cardinals

Arizona did itself a huge service by taking Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd in the mid-first round on Thursday, supplying stud veteran Larry Fitzgerald with an awesome young talent opposite him to help take the lid off defenses.

The Cardinals came back on Saturday with a solid fourth-round pick in Ole Miss offensive tackle Bobby Massie, who was at one point in time projected to go late in the first round. The 6'6", 315-pound OT has the body to become Arizona's savior on the edge, but will more than likely need some time to develop.

Arizona also picked up some insurance under center with sixth-round draft pick Ryan Lindley, a prototypical pocket passer with a big arm out of San Diego State. The QB situation in the desert remains a little cloudy, but the Cardinals certainly didn't hurt themselves by acquiring another signal-caller.

Grade: A-

Jerry Jones' club made waves around the league on Thursday night when it traded its first- and second-round picks in order to move up to the No. 6 spot. That's where Dallas selected arguably the best defensive player in this year's draft, LSU defensive back Morris Claiborne.

Late on Friday the Cowboys made their second addition of the weekend, claiming Boise State's Tyrone Crawford in the third round. The defensive end was the 81st overall pick, and has a promising future as a starter in Big D.

Saturday's gem was fifth-rounder Danny Coale from Virginia Tech. The hard-nosed wide receiver is seen as a quality pick by many who believe he will fit in right away as a dependable safety valve for veteran quarterback Tony Romo.

Grade: A

The Packers continued their tradition of great drafts in 2012 by focusing heavily on the defensive side of the ball (which is the safest bet in the draft). Green Bay took USC pass-rusher Nick Perry with the No. 28 pick in the first round, igniting a stretch of six straight defensive players, which ended outside linebacker Terrell Manning in the fifth round on Saturday.

Other than Perry, second- and third-round picks Jerel Worthy and Casey Hayward are expected to step in this coming season and make an impact. Worthy, a defensive tackle out of Michigan State will likely be used as massive defensive end in Green Bay's 3-4 scheme, while Hayward, a defensive back from Vanderbilt will most likely see the field on special teams and in obvious passing situations on defense.

Grade: A+
