Case Keenum to Houston Texans: Former Cougars Star QB Signs as Free Agent

Randy ChambersJun 6, 2018

Just because you're not drafted in the NFL draft doesn't mean that you can't make a career for yourself at the next level. Now that the 2012 NFL draft is over, teams are making phone calls inviting some of the top undrafted players to come workout for them and fight for a roster spot.

One of the more interesting signings comes from the Houston Texans as they've made the move to sign quarterback Case Keenum. If you're a resident of the Houston area, you're probably familiar with the name because he was a five-year starter for the Houston Cougars football program.

So it's pretty safe to say that he doesn't have to go too far.

"

"If you would've told me this is where I would be at the end of today yesterday or last week, I would be with the Texans, I couldn't have been happier. I'm absolutely thrilled, not only to stay in Houston. There's so many things that mean a lot to me and it's just one of those things where God just makes the right place for so many reasons," Keenum said via My Fox Houston.

"

Keenum had a ridiculous career at Houston, throwing for over 19,000 career yards and 155 passing touchdowns. He is the NCAA all-time leader in passing yards, touchdowns and completions, with 1,546.

The reason Keenum wasn't drafted was likely due to the lack of competition he faced in the weak C-USA. It's hard to judge talent when you're playing teams like Rice, UTEP and UAB every season. He also lacks arm strength and has a weird release.

While the signing doesn't guarantee him a roster spot come next year, he does have a pretty good shot moving forward. The Texans currently only have two quarterbacks on the roster in Matt Schaub and T.J. Yates. And, this is a team that learned how important backup quarterbacks are when Schaub missed a good portion of the year with a season-ending injury.

It's going to be interesting to see how this homecoming pans out. If Keenum can produce even half the numbers he did in college, the Texans may have landed one of the bigger steals in this year's draft.
