Kellen Moore: Detroit Lions Reportedly Sign Undrafted Boise State QB

Sam R. QuinnApr 28, 2012

Quarterback Kellen Moore, who went undrafted in the 2012 NFL draft, has come to terms with the up-and-coming NFC North squad.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Detroit Lions will take a chance on the former Boise State star.

And from Chris McCosky of the Detroit News

"According to reports, one of the first undrafted rookies the Lions signed was Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore."

Going undrafted was largely unexpected for Moore, the winningest quarterback in college football history, but he will look to further his career in the Motor City.

Moore will presumably serve as a backup to Matt Stafford, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him on the field sometime next season, as the oft-injured Stafford played in just 13 games in 2009 and 2010.

The 22-year-old Moore is known for his leadership qualities, as well as his impeccable pre-snap reads and intelligence. If Moore wasn't so physically limited at 6'1", 190 pounds, he would have been a first-round talent.

He threw for almost 15,000 yards over his four-year Broncos career. Put that stat next to 142 touchdowns and just 28 interceptions, and you've got a recipe for a steal. He also led the nation in completion percentage last season, completing almost 75 percent of his passes.

One of Moore's weaknesses is his lack of arm strength, which will inhibit him from making certain NFL-caliber throws that quarterbacks who were drafted ahead of him can make.

It's funny to see that Chandler Harnish, a quarterback out of Northern Illinois who was hardly talked about, became the 2012 Mr. Irrelevant, while Moore sat home waiting for a call.

Jon Gruden said this about Moore after his "QB Camp":

“Some of these throws are the damnedest throws I’ve seen. It’s not a 103 mile an hour fastball, but the ball is placed perfectly with great anticipation.”

If Gruden is right about Moore, teams will be kicking themselves for letting him slip through their fingers.
