NFL Draft 2012: Breaking Down the Top Undrafted Players
There's nothing glamorous about being an undrafted free agent, but that doesn't mean you can't have a highly successful NFL career.
Some of the best players in history, like Warren Moon, Kurt Warner, Priest Holmes and Rod Smith went undrafted, but still managed to have great careers. Ditto for modern day studs Antonio Gates, Victor Cruz, Wes Welker and Tony Romo.
So although not having your name called on draft day is disappointing, it is by no means a death sentence handed down by the NFL. That should be encouraging news for the following players, who are the best of the rest following seven rounds of NFL draft action.
Sports Ilustrated's Peter King thinks it's a travesty that Moore wasn't drafted, and I have to agree.
"Don't mean to preach. But Kellen Moore undrafted--absurd. Just absurd. Did NFL people watch his games?
— Peter King (@SI_PeterKing) April 28, 2012"
I'm not saying I love Moore's pro potential, but the kid was definitely worth a seventh round pick.
He was highly productive in college, routinely proving that he knew how to win games. He was also insanely accurate, completing 74.3 percent of his passes in 2011.
I understand the knocks on Moore. He's too small. His arm isn't strong enough. His mechanics leave something to be desired.
Still, I think someone should have taken a chance on him. Instead, he went undrafted and signed with Detroit.
Vontaze Burfict, LB, Cincinnati Bengals
Once seen as a first round caliber talent, Burfict plummeted down draft boards because of some unflattering realizations.
From his poor combine numbers, to his reputation as a team-killer at ASU, to his failed drug test in February, it's no surprise that teams quickly soured on Burfict.
With all his talent, he could still have a solid career for the Bengals. He just needs to pull his head out of his, um, you know, before that can happen.
Jeff Fuller, WR, Miami Dolphins
Fuller went undrafted, but he quickly took to his twitter account to announce that he's taking his talents to South Beach.
"MIAMI.
— Jeff Fuller (@j_fuller8) April 29, 2012"
This is good move by the Dolphins, who have picked up one of the most underrated players in this class.
Fuller has elite size (6'4", 220 pounds), and his 2011 production (70 catches, 828 yards, six touchdowns) wasn't exactly bad. He doesn't have great speed, but with his height, leaping ability and body control, Fuller should be a monster in the red zone.
I love this pickup for Miami.
