Kellen Moore: Best Fits for the Boise State Phenom as an Undrafted Free Agent

John RozumApr 28, 2012

Even though Kellen Moore finished his college career with an all-time record of 50-3, the former Boise State quarterback didn't get his name called during the 2012 NFL draft.

Yes, there are reasonable knocks on Moore, as he's undersized, doesn't have a big arm, and needs more experience under center; but, that doesn't mean the kid won't get a look as an undrafted free agent.

To that end, here are a few teams where Moore fits the mold and could potentially emerge as the backup quarterback in 2012.

Andrew Luck is the obvious starter, but aside from Luck, the Colts need a backup. Drew Stanton has been a career backup since his rookie campaign in 2008 for Detroit, and Kellen Moore will challenge him and 2012 Mr. Irrelevant Chandler Harnish for the No. 2 spot.

With an array of receiving targets in Reggie Wayne, Coby Fleener and now speedsters in T.Y. Hilton and LaVon Brazill, the Colts' quick-hitting passing game bodes well for Moore's development. Additionally, Indy brought in another running back with Mississippi State's Vick Ballard to help pound between the tackles.

When given an opportunity to play (mainly preseason), Moore can produce off of play-action and his intermediate accuracy will benefit over the middle against man and zone.

A lot of three- to five-step drops will occur with Moore at the helm, so expect Indy to put him under center more than anything.

With Matt Flynn in Seattle, the Green Bay Packers need a quick-release quarterback with solid mechanics to spread the field for coach Mike McCarthy.

Aaron Rodgers is a great quarterback to learn under, and Moore will battle for the No. 3 quarterback spot with B.J. Coleman, as Graham Harrell is the backup.

Still, the Packers are a great team for Moore to develop, as Green Bay's offense is supremely efficient. The cheese have a number of excellent route-runners like Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson and tight end Jermichael Finley that will speed up Moore's development.

Play-action won't be as relevant since the Packers simply air it out so much, but Moore can work from under center and hit targets on quick slants, pop passes, screens and anyone else sitting between the zones.

Further, Green Bay suits well as the NFC North isn't the most dominant pass-rushing or pass defensive division.

In San Diego's pro-spread system, Kellen Moore can polish his game rather quickly. The Chargers provide reliable targets such as Antonio Gates, Vincent Brown, Malcom Floyd, Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal.

So, Moore can do a lot from shotgun by using middle screens, hitting running back Ryan Mathews out of the backfield, and setting up play-action off jet sweeps and fake tosses.

Of the teams mentioned here as well, San Diego presents the strongest and most consistent rushing attack. Mathews is one of the league's better all-around backs, and he helps keep defenses off balance.

Philip Rivers is another excellent quarterback to learn from, and Moore can battle Charlie Whitehurst for the backup position. With his football IQ, ability to read defenses pre-snap, and fast setup in the pocket, Moore can get the rock to the Bolts' explosive receivers before the defense can react.

The AFC West is a tough division to enter, but Moore's experience and resume proves he deserves a shot.

UPDATE: Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reports that Jim Schwartz and Co. wasted no time in snapping up Kellen Moore.

"According to reports, one of the first undrafted rookies the Lions signed was Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore."
