Manchester City vs. Manchester United: Red Devils Will Dominate Derby Clash

Adam WellsJun 3, 2018

Manchester United couldn't have written a better script for the end of the English Premier League season. Not only are the Red Devils three points ahead of Manchester City heading into the derby clash, but they have a chance to all but secure a title with a victory on the road against their rivals.

With only two matches to go after this one, United has no pressure to perform against City. Instead, everything falls on the shoulders of The Blues to not only stay alive, but to make sure they don't give their rivals the satisfaction of celebrating on the same field they will be playing on.

Manchester United legend Lou Macari did an interview with Mark Ogden of the U.K. Telegraph in anticipation of this match and laid out just how important this match was for both squads.

"

I can’t remember playing in a derby where both teams were going for something. In 1974, we were at the bottom and City were below mid-table. In games after that, we would be in contention and City wouldn’t be, and vice versa, so there is no doubt about the importance of Monday’s game.

"

You know that this match means more than just another notch in the derby rivalry when you can get legends from the past talking about what this match means for both sides.

United is so close to its second straight title that playing its rival on this stage could actually make it easier for them to perform.

Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, et al. will be relaxed and loose because they will hear so much about the derby before it happens that winning the English Premier League crown isn't even going to be on their minds.

Not that it would matter, because United has the deeper squad. In the end, that is what it all comes down to. We can talk about how much this derby means and everything like that, but when you put the two squads against the other, it is clear that United is better.

City doesn't have the goaltending or defense necessary to keep up with United. In what will be a fierce, intense battle between two of the great squads in fútbol today, United will walk away all smiles.
