Washington Redskins 2012 Draft: Grading 3rd Round Selection of Josh Leribeus
The Washington Redskins began the third round by trading back two spots with the Buffalo Bills. From there, the Redskins used the 71st overall pick to select SMU guard Josh LeRibeus.
The pick addresses an obvious need and it is encouraging to see the Redskins use their highest pick after the first round on the offensive line. The front five still needs work and selecting LerRibeus can help.
At 6'3" and 312 pounds, he is a squat blocker with a natural zone blocking frame. His best attribute may be his off the snap speed.
LeRibeus is able to quickly fire off the line and engage with defenders. He also utilizes his hands extremely well, displaying sound technique in this area.
Surprisingly, LeRibeus struggles athletically, particularly in space. Given how important agility at the second level is in Mike Shanahan's zone blocking system, this would seem like a serious deficiency.
LeRibeus was also a bit of a reach in the third round and the Redskins chose to pass on the likes of Donald Stephenson and Brandon Washington. However, his selection demonstrates a necessary commitment to improving the offensive line.
Grade: C+
LeRibeus is a surprising name, but he has the tenacity and initial quickness to provide strong competition along the interior.
