Kentucky Derby 2012: This Year's Coolest Names from Churchill Downs
As we prep for "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" on May 5 at Churchill Downs, it's time to look at some of the competitors. While the odds and lines for where they will finish are the more exciting topic, it's also fun to look at some of the names and see which ones are the most creative, most fun to say and are overall the best of the bunch.
Here are some of the horses you'll hear on the call.
Hansen
Be honest, when you hear "Hansen," if you were born in the mid-90's or prior, you think of the band that rocked the world with hits like "MMMBop."
Although the band spells their name win an "o" instead of the "e", it has the same effect. The horse was also not named for the band, but for the owner, Dr. Kendall Hansen.
With four top-two finishes in his last four races, he's also one of the premier candidates to be in contention, at 14-1 odds.
Daddy Long Legs
This horse gets the award for best cross-species comparison. The spider of the same name is known for being very poisonous, without a mouth to inflict any damage.
That comparison seems fitting, since his current odds are 35-1. Whether he packs the punch to finish the job remains to be seen, but he'll certainly have one of the most interesting names to hear as he makes his way through the 10 furlongs.
Rousing Sermon
You church-goers know there's nothing better on a Sunday morning than leaving the building feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the week.
I imagine owners Larry and Marianne Williams were striving for some of the same in this name. Here's hoping he can make a better dent in the minds of Derby faithful than his current 35-1 odds, leaving fans remembering him if they were in attendance for years to come, just like a good sermon.
