NFL Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz Heading into Round 2-3

Chris TrapassoMay 31, 2018

The first round of the 2012 NFL Draft was loaded with trades that yielded a wacky yet intriguing Round 1, but tonight's second and third rounds are equally important with a multitude of interesting prospects still available.

The St. Louis Rams will go on the clock with the No. 33 overall pick at 7 p.m. EST, so before that, let's round up some of the latest trade rumors and other buzz that's circulating around the Internet.

ESPN's Adam Schefter sent out the following tweet regarding the Rams and the first pick of Round 2:

Makes sense. They have fantastic options at wide receiver and offensive tackle, their two most glaring needs.

Dallas Cowboys and Mike Jenkins

The Cowboys vaulted from No. 14 overall to the No. 6 overall pick to land LSU star cornerback Morris Claiborne last night, and with the free-agent addition of Brandon Carr, Mike Jenkins is now seemingly expendable.

A league source tells ProFootballTalk.com that the Cowboys are willing to trade their 2008 first-round draft pick from South Florida sometime during the final six rounds of the draft.

He is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is set to make a base salary of slightly more than $1 million in 2012.

It'll be interesting to see if Dallas finds any suitors for Jenkins, a guy that's battled injuries and has been relatively inconsistent during his time in Big D.

You'd think the Cowboys would like to hold onto him playing in a division with the Giants' receiving corps, the electricity the Philadelphia Eagles bring to the field and now Robert Griffin III in Washington, but chances are, they'll look to add another corner later in the draft.

The Browns drafted Brandon Weeden with their second selection in the first round, and Colt McCoy trade rumors were sparked instantly.

According to Cleveland.com, McCoy's days with the Browns could be numbered.

"

When asked if he would try to trade McCoy over the next two days of the draft, GM Tom Heckert said, "It's something we'll talk about tonight and tomorrow." He added that the Browns could possibly move up from their next pick at No. 37 to the top of the second round.

"

Head coach Pat Shurmur shied away from answering any direct questions about McCoy or a potential quarterback controversy in Cleveland:

"

"We got a new quarterback that's going to be with us," Shurmur said. "Tonight is about Brandon Weeden, not about the competition.

"

"The Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns are considering a deal for quarterback Colt McCoy."

I don't see how McCoy could stay with the Browns. They used a first-round pick on a quarterback, so it'll be hard for Weeden not to be the favorite for the starting job.

That, coupled with McCoy's struggles over the last two years don't bode well for his future wearing a Browns uniform.

Heading to the Packers would be a great situation for him to learn from one of the game's best and be surrounded with premier offensive talent.

New York Giants and Mathias Kiwanuka

The Super Bowl champs signed Mathias Kiwanuka, the versatile front seven defender to a three-year contract through 2015 today.

How could this affect the draft?

Well, pass-rushing demon Osi Umenyiora is still without a new deal and has been upset with his contract situation for a few years now.

"

So what do I do? Do I suck it up and come back and put my tail between my legs like I've always done for these last couple of years? Do I do that again this year? Or do I go out there and try to do what's best for me, just this one time?

"

Vacchiano expanded on what the future may hold for the Umenyiora, and says that he doesn't think this will lead to an increase in trade talks.

However, the tone from Umenyiora seems serious and it'll be interesting if the G-Men at least explore their options with other teams.
