Andrew Luck: Colts' Quarterback Will Win Rookie of the Year Honors
Andrew Luck was selected by the Indianapolis Colts with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft. Luck will start for the Colts immediately and enjoy incredible early success.
Luck steps into Peyton Manning's enormous shoes from the get-go. No one expects Luck to be Manning-like in his rookie season, but Colts faithful do expect encouraging production on an otherwise dismal squad. Winning a few more games wouldn't hurt either.
The Colts' offense finished near the bottom of most major categories in 2011. However, Luck will have weapons. Many of the Colts' offensive struggles last season can be placed firmly on Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky's shoulders.
Luck will have Reggie Wayne to throw to and an improving Donald Brown lined up behind him in the backfield. Austin Collie is also a capable skill player with an adequate quarterback running the show.
Also, the Colts will absolutely add a few more weapons before the draft is over. Coby Fleener is still on the board and would be a logical pick for the Colts at No. 34. Fleener can stretch the field and is familiar with Luck from their days at Stanford.
Many fans will look at the Colts and label Luck's 2012 season as painful to watch. The Colts will still be bad overall, but Luck is going to be impressive on an individual level.
Luck's acumen and football knowledge will allow him to grasp the offense quickly. His understanding of the scheme and familiarity with a pro-style attack will accelerate his development as a professional quarterback.
Luck has the arm, mobility and mental edge to put together an intriguing 2012 campaign. The Colts are going to showcase his talents early, and he will have big numbers by the end of the season.
The Colts may win five games this season. That is a drastic improvement over their miserable 2011 season. Three games may not seem like a lot, but it does to anyone who watched this Colts squad last season.
Voters for the Rookie of the Year will see Luck's talent and the Colts' minor turnaround. Luck's ability to win games with a questionable supporting cast will solidify his elite potential and earn him some hardware early in his career.
Quarterbacks are scrutinized because of their bust potential. Obviously, the potential is always there, but not in this case.
Luck is a sure-fire star. He will not waste any time putting that label on full display.
