Jacksonville Jaguars: Who Should Team Get in the Second and Third Rounds?
After wheeling and dealing in the first round, the Jacksonville Jaguars need to put their collective feet on the jugular of the NFL Draft and continue to make a splash.
I know it sounds easy, but it also sounds like a great plan. Only problem is this team cannot sit back and laud over their first pick if they cannot follow it up with a shoddy second and third round of drafting.
While the fans are excited with what happened on Thursday night, they want to be overcome with giddiness and hope.
The Jaguars have done well in the second round, bringing in Maurice Jones-Drew, Brad Meester, Daryl Smith and Khalif Barnes in the past.
And it should be known there is still some great talent—some first-round talent—that was left on the board for the taking. One of them may be there when the Jaguars pick sixth in the second round.
Here is some of the talent left from last night that the Jaguars could look at tonight in New York.
Courtney Upshaw, LB/DE, Alabama
1 of 6How he did not get chosen in the first round is beyond me.
Upshaw was the glue that held the Alabama defense together. He could be the edge rusher this team could be looking for.
As a player who is 6'1" and 272 pounds, he could be a Terrell Suggs-type of player. And the Jaguars still need a pass-rusher to play opposite of Jeremy Mincey.
Don't Forget About the Offensive Line
2 of 6While there is talk that the linemen will all be healthy coming into camp, and this includes right tackle Eben Britton, there is still need for depth on the line.
The shocking thing about last night is that Cordy Glenn and Jonathan Martin, two huge tackles, were not drafted.
Will they be there when the Jaguars choose sixth in the second round? Maybe.
I could see the Jaguars taking Glenn, who can play both guard positions and right tackle over Martin, who I suspect will be one of the first prospects to be taken Friday night.
Listen to Trades
3 of 6The Jaguars are not in a position to sell their life away, but listening to trades cannot hurt.
Right now, since the team got the player it desired, filling in the other puzzle pieces is key to making this team work.
It would have to be a really good deal, but the team can ill afford to trade its third-round pick.
Find Cam Johnson
4 of 6The Virginia defensive end is the guy the Jaguars should target for a pass-rusher.
While Upshaw may be available in the second round and may be the one on the Jaguars radar, if he isn't then Johnson can also help you with a pass rush and is someone who can help contain the run on the outside.
Get a Defensive Tackle
5 of 6Here is where it gets a little tricky.
Do you select an end for pass rush right away, or do you get one of the talented tackles left on the board?
Andre Branch on Clemson, Upshaw and maybe someone like Vinny Curry fit the mold. But Jerel Worthy is there as is Devon Still and, of course, Brandon Thompson.
Still Shop for Receivers
6 of 6Now is when you can take Brian Quick from Appalachian State (go ahead, Gene, I dare you).
Alshon Jeffery, Rueben Randle, Brian Quick, Stephen Hill and, yes, Coby Fleener.
All there for the taking.
If the Jaguars can trade back into the second round and get two picks, which would include any of these players, then I say go for it.
It could be a very good day for the team in its rebuilding process.
