Russell Wilson: Likely Landing Spots in 2012 NFL Draft for Wisconsin Star

Mike WalshJun 7, 2018

You won't find very many athletes as well-rounded as Russell Wilson.

The Wisconsin Badger star has already played professional sports in his career, and he has yet to be selected in tonight's NFL draft. Wilson was chosen with the 140th pick of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft and went on to play for the Colorado Rockies' Single-A affiliate last summer.

Wilson is coming off a insanely efficient season at Wisconsin, completing 72.8 percent of his passes. He also put up the gaudy TD-INT ratio of 33 to 4, while also rushing for six scores.

Unfortunately for Wilson, he has declared in a year where two of the best players in the country, and now the first and second overall picks, are quarterbacks.

Also playing the same position is Ryan Tannehill, taken by the Miami Dolphins at No. 8.

That leaves Wilson as the consensus fourth-best QB prospect in the draft and probably looking from the outside-in on the opening round. Wilson's lone hope is for a team desperately in need of a young, quality backup.

The Green Bay Packers are an obvious choice to perhaps land the Wisconsin star. With Matt Flynn leaving for the West Coast and Pete Carroll, there is a void behind Aaron Rodgers. The Packers fans are undoubtedly already familiar with the prospect so there would be obvious excitement to see him in green and yellow.

The other reasoning is that it is very important for Green Bay to have a quality backup. Rodgers does have somewhat of a history with head injuries, and one of those could sideline him for extended time. The world saw what Flynn could do with this talented offense, so there is no reason Wilson couldn't come in and do the same should Rodgers get hurt.

Another possibility is the Philadelphia Eagles. Michael Vick is not the most durable quarterback in the league and the chances of him making it through complete seasons diminishes with every hit and every year.

Vick's backups in Philadelphia have often left something to be desired, especially last season when Mike Kafka and Vince Young didn't light it up in his absence. Wilson would be a good fit for Andy Reid's offense as well. He can use his legs better than most and that is an offense built on a speedy and evasive quarterback.

A third option could be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a later round. After a hot 2010, Josh Freeman struggled mightily last season. His backup currently is Dan Orlovsky, who had a chance in Indianapolis last season and stumbled.

Freeman's backup in 2011 was fellow speedster Josh Johnson, now with the San Fransisco 49ers. Wilson owns a few of the characteristics of Johnson and Freeman, however Wilson has a superior arm to Johnson.

It would be a crafty move for Tampa Bay to snatch him up at some point and see if he can develop in a year should Freeman not right the ship.
