Robert Griffin III: Top Prospect's Character Matches His Impressive Skills

Ryan RudnanskyApr 26, 2012

Beyond Robert Griffin III's impressive skill set, he's also a leader, and that's what has made him the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Griffin's poise and leadership was evident last season at Baylor, when he tossed for over 4,200 yards and 37 touchdowns to six interceptions. He led the Bears to a 67-56 victory in the Alamo Bowl, accounting for 350 total yards and two total touchdowns, and he had four 400-yard passing games during the season.

Perhaps Griffin's most impressive moment was when he threw a game-winning 32-yard strike across his body to Terrance Williams against Oklahoma on Nov. 19, with a defender right in his grill. In that game, he ended up with 479 passing yards and four passing touchdowns, while rushing for 72 yards. At the time, Baylor was ranked No. 22 in the country, while Oklahoma was ranked No. 5.

But it's not just Griffin's pocket poise and leadership. You listen to him talk and he says all the right things, and it never seems forced. Put in a tough position earlier this month when the Indianapolis Colts were choosing between him and Andrew Luck, Griffin remained confident that he deserved to be selected No. 1 overall, but he never stepped on any toes.

He's shown immense respect for Luck, as he should, but he isn't about to bow down, either. He's a competitive individual behind his down-to-earth nature off the field.

When Griffin's character was questioned by an unnamed scout earlier this month, Griffin didn't give him/her any fodder. He simply didn't respond. When Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller questioned his durability, he remained quiet. And why should he? Such rubbish should be ignored.

It's not just Griffin's skills on the field that make him an electric prospect. It's his character and the way he conducts himself. You can just tell he's going to be a hard worker in the NFL, and he's a great model for a franchise and the league altogether.

So when Griffin succeeds in the NFL, remember that his makeup is a big reason why he got there.
