Robert Griffin III: Colts Will Regret Passing on the Heisman Winner

Kevin Van PeltApr 26, 2012

The Indianapolis Colts should draft Robert Griffin III, not Andrew Luck.

The Colts recently informed the Stanford quarterback that they will take him with their first-round pick. While luck may be a great quarterback in the NFL, Griffin is part of a transition of the quarterback position.

Players like Cam Newton and Tim Tebow has shown that athletic quarterbacks are more dangerous than the standard pocket quarterbacks. In the case of Newton, he showed last season that he is useful in goal line situations and can throw the deep ball well. Tebow has not had as much success throwing the ball but is a very dangerous runner who can lead his teams to wins.

Griffin is the first of the athletic quarterbacks who seem to have it all. He has incredible speed which was showcased at the NFL Combine with his 40-yard time of 4.38 seconds. He follows that up with his incredible arm strength and can put a good touch on the ball.

Not only does he have the arm strength needed for the NFL but he has the accuracy. At Baylor he threw an interception once every 70 throws. That is an outstanding number that would make any NFL team happy.

Almost everyone would probably say the same thing about Luck. He has all the qualities needed to be an NFL quarterback. This may be true but the Griffin's athletic ability put him over Luck.

Pass rushers in the NFL have become quicker and more athletic and can apply quick pressure on the quarterback. Just look at the NFC East, the division that Griffin will most likely be in. The Super Bowl champions New York Giants won in large part thanks to their great athletic front line. Just like the quarterback position is transitioning, the defensive end position already has.

Athletic players are better suited in the new high speed NFL. In the last few years athletic quarterbacks have been taking over games. Aaron Rodgers can be considered an athletic quarterback since he has great speed and can move his feet well in the pocket. He also can run for large chunks of yards when needed.

Griffin and Luck have been inseparable as we head closer to the draft. Most would agree that you can't go wrong with either of them. They are equal in almost every aspect. The one aspect they are different is their athletic abilities. That is where Griffin has the edge.

This can obviously not be proven but I feel that the pressure to take the sure thing in Luck had a lot to do with the decision they made. He has been the overall number one pick ever since the 2011 draft ended. The fear of missing out on what could have been and hearing the backlash of fans and the possibility of the front office losing their jobs had to of weighed in on their decision.

The ironic part is that they will be regretting fearing being wrong with Griffin and taking Luck.
