2012 NFL Draft: Indianapolis Colts Looking to Trade Picks, Dwight Freeney

Danny WebsterJun 7, 2018

This is why we love the NFL Draft: Nine hours away until the first pick is announced and big moves may already be on the horizon.

Speaking of the first pick, the Indianapolis Colts will be on the clock in about nine hours and will select Andrew Luck, barring any wacky setbacks that may happen that we don't know about.

But what about later on for the Colts?

According to SI's Peter King and Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper, the Colts are, once again, looking to shop Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney at some point during the draft.

Freeney has been on the trade block for a considerable amount of time in the offseason and was coveted by a number of teams for a possible trade. Freeney is owed over $14 million this year.

Obviously, whoever would get Freeney would be getting someone who is still in their prime as a feared pass-rusher in this league. Not to mention a ton of cap space once his contract runs out. Anybody who can pay up the $14 million to Freeney would be getting their money's worth.

More specifically, if a team is playing a 4-3 defense, don't be surprised if they come calling either tonight or tomorrow during the second round. The Colts are switching to a 3-4 defense this year and there is a question mark as to how Freeney would produce in an outside linebacker role in that scheme.

It's also a high possibility that the Colts may look for a crazy bidding price for Freeney, meaning more picks in the second and third round, and if push comes to shove, maybe a first rounder for next year if someone is that desperate for some pass rush. In short, don't expect a mediocre return price, much like the Eagles getting virtually nothing for Asante Samuel.

This could also mean that if they're looking to shop Freeney, that it might be a given that the Colts are looking at the defensive linemen available in the second and third rounds.

Buckle your seat belts, folks. We're a long ways away from the first pick, but things are heating up quickly.

If you're the Colts, are you ready to get rid of Dwight Freeney? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.
