Madden 13: Calvin Johnson and Revamped Presentation Will Make Game Best Yet
When Calvin Johnson was announced as the winner of the Madden 13 cover, this is the first thought that went through my mind: Now is the time for EA Sports to make the game feel like a better, more realistic take on the NFL experience.
That is not to say the game has been bad, far from it. But there was a feeling of EA trying to get by on its laurels and the NFL brand name than trying to take some chances, the way it was forced to do when Sega had the popular NFL 2K5 game almost eight years ago.
True to form, EA Sports is taking everything that didn't quite work with the Madden series in recent years and doing all it can to make the experience the best yet.
According to a report from IGN.com, EA has doubled the size of its development team for this game to fix a lot of issues that have plagued the series for a long time. Specifically, the feeling that every player in the game is exactly the same. They run the same way, throw the same way, act the same way, etc.
Even subtle things like the trajectory of the ball being thrown are going to get enhanced. These are small things, but they make all the difference when it comes to really selling a game to casual fans.
Hardcore fans don't care what the game looks like, they are going to buy it anyway. We are talking about Madden after all. How do you not buy it?
There are so many small things that have not worked for the series for a long time, but give EA credit for listening to what the fans of the series have been saying and taking the time to make sure they present it the best way possible.
With Johnson on the cover, you know that EA is going to figure out some way to incorporate something special for the wide receivers. It is almost a given that the position the cover athlete plays gets some kind of upgrade or enhancement.
Even if they don't enhance the position, we can all stare in amazement at the awesomeness that is Calvin Johnson on a video game cover, then pop the game into the system and enjoy.
August can't get here soon enough.
