Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich: Champions League Penalty Shootout

For Real Madrid, it will be a penalty shootout they will never want to watch again.

Their recent loss to Bayern Munich, which saw the German side progress through to the final of the UEFA Champions League, will be a shootout that they will spend forever trying to erase from their memories.

Not only because of the significance, which meant they were eliminated from the competition.

Mainly just because when it comes down to it, it was a terrible penalty shootout.

For a side that boasts some of the best attacking names in the world, it was a terrible penalty shootout.

For Real Madrid, the storyline couldn't have gone any worse in the shootout.

David Alaba sent Iker Casillas the wrong way, as did Mario Gomez; Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka both found Manuel Neuer.

2-0 Bayern Munich after four penalties.

After Casillas saved penalties from both Toni Kroos and Philipp Lahm and Xabi Alonso netted home for the hosts, Madrid looked like they were back in with a chance.

2-1 Bayern Munich with Sergio Ramos stepping up for Los Blancos.

He wasn't even close.

Bastian Schweinsteiger then found the back of the net with Bayern's fifth penalty and took the visitors through to the final of Europe's most prestigious tournament.

Munich erupted; Madrid fell silent.

See, sometimes football isn't fair—sometimes the better team doesn't win and sometimes the footballing gods simply aren't looking after you on the night.

But there are times when you truly do have nobody to blame but yourself.

And with three missed penalties in four kicks, Real Madrid lost that match all by themselves.

It wasn't fate, it wasn't luck and the gods weren't wearing Bayern jerseys.

They simply weren't good enough when it came down to that penalty shootout.

A penalty shootout I'm sure, they'll never never want to watch again.
