NFL Draft Rumors: Latest Buzz the Day Before Draft Begins
With one day to go until the 2012 draft madness begins, the rumor mill is heating up.
The Minnesota Vikings are rumored to be willing to trade their No. 3 selection, even though it would be crazy to do so.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said he'd trade the pick if presented with the right offer, which could come from Miami if it wants to ensure it gets Ryan Tannehill.
It could come from another team too, when you consider Spielman's insistence that the trade front "has really heated up in the last 24 hours," according to Dan Wiederer of the Star Tribune.
Publicly, the Vikings have said that they're considering three players: left tackle Matt Kalil, cornerback Morris Claiborne and wide receiver Justin Blackmon. It stands to reason that none of those players will be available if the Vikings trade down below No. 7 (Miami has the No. 8 pick).
Claiborne will likely go to the Buccaneers at No. 5. If the Rams don't take Blackmon with the sixth overall pick, they'll probably take Kalil. And if Blackmon is still available when Jacksonville picks at No. 7, they'll take him.
This likely leaves the Vikings with Riley Reiff, the distant second-rated tackle behind Kalil.
If the Vikings want a top-quality player—and by all indications, they should want Kalil, given their massive hole at left tackle and the fact that Kalil could be the best prospect available since Joe Thomas—they can't make this trade. Not unless they're willing to give up on all of the players they've been considering.
Elsewhere, the Bills seem to be gearing up to make a play for Mark Barron, the safety who led Alabama's NCAA-best defense in 2011. Barron is projected to be a top-15 pick—most likely to the Cowboys at No. 14 or to the Eagles at No. 15—but now the Bills are now "very interested" in Barron and might take him with the No. 10 overall pick, according to WGR's Joe Buscaglia.
Barron would be a great fit for the Bills because he gives them a weapon in the secondary to neutralize the impact of New England's and New York's monster tight ends.
Buscaglia also reported that Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly has piqued the Bills' interest, as well as South Carolina cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who's been projected as a mid-first rounder.
In Seattle, the Times' Danny O'Neil reported that the Seahawks are primarily in the market for a pass rusher and USC product Nick Perry might be the right selection. Seattle had just one player who finished the 2011 season with more than four sacks, so shoring up the defensive line is a big priority.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has ties to Perry, whom he recruited while with the Trojans, but the team is also considering Quinton Coples, Melvin Ingram and Courtney Upshaw. ESPN draft expert Todd McShay threw Chandler Jones into the mix too, saying he could go as high as No. 12.
Carroll wouldn't give anything away, telling O'Neil, "There's a lot of edge rushers in this draft, which is exciting. We're always looking. Certainly in this draft it's one of the issues that we'd like to attend to."
McShay's latest mock draft has Coples landing in Seattle, but all of that could change in the next 24 hours. You never know until the draft clock officially starts running.
